Chapter Five

“Doc,” Lucy reached out to touch his shoulder as she noted his stiff stance before her, “is she?”

“Dead,” Kevin nodded as he took in a breath, “I think so.”

“We’re too late,” Lucy gasped as her stomach turned, “oh god Doc.”

“Lucy, stay back,” Kevin urged as he stepped forward.

“Don’t go in there Doc,” Lucy urged reaching out to him again, “just stay here.”

“Lucy, I have to make sure she’s really...” he trailed off as he took in a breath.

“Be careful,” she warned as he stepped forward carefully avoiding the pool of blood present at his
feet as he stepped around the fallen figure before him. Bending down he caught a glimpse of the
blood stained scrubs she was wearing as he shook his head, “why now? Why do this,” he
questioned to himself as his eyes traveled over the lifeless form ahead of him. Reaching for her wrist,
he searched for a pulse as he noted a piece of paper clenched within her finger tips.

“What is that?” Lucy’s voice called out from behind Kevin as he nearly jumped out of his skin.

“I thought I told you to wait out there,” Kevin snapped at her.

“I wasn’t going to let you do this alone,” Lucy informed him concerned, “what is that?”

“I don’t know Lucy,” Kevin started with a frown, “it looks like a piece of paper. Maybe a note.”

“Maybe we should check it out,” Lucy suggested as she moved forward until Kevin stopped her.

“What are you doing?” He asked with a frown.

           “I just thought...”

“Just leave it Lucy,” Kevin sighed, “we don’t want to touch anything more before Garcia gets here.”

           “So I take it she’s...”

           “dead...” Kevin nodded poignantly.

“Poor Gabriella,” Lucy shook her head, “she was so young to....” she stopped herself as her gaze
drifted back to the floor, “oh my God. Doc look!”

“I can’t believe this is happening,” Eve frowned slightly, “I mean Ian and now this,” she looked to
Chris, “We have to find Gabriella.”

“We will,” Chris said hoping his words didn’t come too little, too late as they stepped out into the
           parking lot.

“There you are,” Gabriella called out to the group as she emerged from the landing she’d been
standing on, “where did you go before?”

“What?” Eve gave her a look.

“Jack told me to wait here because he said there was something wrong and then he left,” Gabriella
explained with a frown, “so are you going to tell me what’s going on now or are you going to keep
           me in suspense?”

“You knew she was here?” Chris looked to his brother.

“I found her in the lot,” Jack nodded.

“But you said you didn’t see her when we asked you,” Chris reminded him.

“Well I didn’t at first, but then when I was on the phone....” he gave Gabriella a glance.

“He was on the phone,” she nodded in response, “but still what’s going on?”

“You saw her and you didn’t bother telling us that,” Eve eyed him curiously.

“I guess in all the excitement it just slipped my mind,” Jack shrugged.

“Anyone care to tell me what in the world is going on? I was on my way home and then he stops me
telling me it’s important that we go back inside and then he disappears,” Gabriella explained.

“Gabby, we need to get you back inside,” Eve started.

“But if you’re out here,” Chris frowned, “then....”

“Then what? Chris what’s going on?”

“We made a mistake,” Chris realized as the color drained from his face, “it wasn’t you.”

“What wasn’t me?” she shook her head.

“If Gabby is fine, maybe there was no other victim. Maybe someone is just yanking our chain,”
Chris let out a breath of relief.

“But Ian’s really dead Chris,” Eve reminded him, “and his murderer is out there.”

“Ian’s dead,” Gabriella gasped, “I know they said there was some kind of accident earlier, but
           dead?”

“Gabby, why don’t we go back inside with Chris and Eve and I’ll explain things to you,” Jack met
her dark eyes after a moment, “alright?”

“Yeah, sure, sure of course. I’d like to get a word in with Joe anyways,” she nodded in response as
Jack opened the door to the hospital once more and Gabby followed him inside.

Chris stepped forward as Eve tugged on his arm. “Something wrong?”

“Try everything,” Eve frowned slightly, “what was that all about?”

           “What do you mean?

“Jack and Gabby. Why didn’t he tell us that he saw her? He specifically told us he hadn’t run into
her,” Eve reminded him, “yet there she was waiting for him.”

“Eve, he seemed pretty upset earlier,” Chris reminded her, “he wasn’t exactly himself at the
           apartment before and now...”

“Chris he hasn’t been himself for a while now,” Eve sighed, “I just don’t get what he didn’t say
           anything about Gabby....”

“Who knows Eve? With Jack, there are probably a million and one reasons why he can’t get his
           facts straight.”

“Chris it’s just....” she stopped herself, “I just want to go home.”

“We’ll get there,” Chris promised bringing his arm around her, “we’ll just go tell Kevin and Lucy
that Gabriella has been found and then we’ll let the police take over. Okay?” she said nothing as he
           squeezed her once again, “hey.”

“Yeah okay,” she nodded in response, “I think that would be best.”

“Eve, everything’s going to be okay,” he promised her as he sensed her apprehension about Ian’s
untimely demise, “it has to be.”

“Ian’s dead Chris,” Eve reminded him poignantly, “how can it be okay?”

“We have each other Eve,” Chris turned her to face him, “and at home we have a beautiful baby girl
who’s a symbol of all the magic in the world. Once we get home, Hope will find a way to make
everything okay. Granted, we can’t bring Ian back, but we can be thankful for what we have.”

“You’re right,” Eve answered tearfully as she latched onto him, “I love you Chris.”

“I love you too Eve,” Chris held her tighter praying that this nightmare would be over before it
           began.

“Care to explain what that was all about?” Gabriella questioned as she and Jack emerged from the
           staircase together.

“It’s just better if you kept what we talked about between us Gabby,” Jack explained nervously.

“Why? I don’t see what the big deal was,” she frowned in response.

“I can’t really explain right now,” Jack checked the time, “but you have to trust me when I say that
the less Chris or anyone else knows, the better.”

“Jack, I still don’t understand why.....” she began as she heard a shriek down the hallway, “what
           was that?”

“I don’t know,” Jack replied as they raced off in the direction of the sound. Finding their way before
the linen closet, Jack noted the officer circling around the area while trying to relocate the curious
staff members amidst the crime scene.

“What happened?” Gabriella asked one of the nurses.

“There’s been another murder,” one explained in a shaky voice.

           “Another murder,” she repeated.

Jack watched the scene as it unfolded before his eyes. He glanced back at the pool of blood on the
floor as he noted the victim’s lifeless form. Taking a step back he tried to shake the image from his
mind as his pager went off. Reaching for his pager, he noted the number and without a word, he
slipped away from the scene making his way towards the payphones. Swiftly he dialed the number
and without awaiting a response, he spoke up as he heard the click on the other end of the line, “We
have a problem,” he said in a frantic whisper as he looked around the corridor, “a big one.”

“Colleen,” Chris called out to her as he and Eve stepped off the elevators, “have you seen Dr.
           Collins around?”

“He’s down the hall,” she motioned towards the officers as Chris and Eve exchanged glances.

“We’re too late,” Eve gasped as her nails dug into Chris’ arm, “oh my god.”

“We just saw Gabriella,” Chris reminded her, “Colleen, where’s Gabby?”

“She was just talking to your brother a minute ago,” Colleen shrugged.

“Eve, wait here,” Chris insisted seeing the officers up ahead, “I’m going to go check it out.”

“Chris,” she started realizing she’d seen more than enough for the evening, “okay go ahead.”

“I’ll be right back,” Chris gave her a quick kiss, “Colleen stay with her.”

“No problem,” Colleen agreed as Chris took off, “So how are you holding up?”

“What?” Eve asked obviously distracted by the happening surrounding her.

“After finding Ian,” Colleen sighed as her eyes misted over with tears, “he was such a good man.”

“Yes he was,” Eve nodded in response, “a great man.”

“I just.....I can’t believe he’s gone,” Colleen replied tearfully, “I mean I knew he was leaving but....”

“I know Colleen,” Eve couldn’t hide her own tears, “he was a good friend and he’s going to be
           missed.”

“I just don’t know what kind of monster could do that to him,” Colleen replied tearfully, “Would
you look at me? I can’t believe I’m putting this on you.”

“I know you cared about him,” Eve replied sympathetically, “he knew it too.”

“I just wish that there was some way someone would’ve been around to help him, to save him....”

“Me too,” Eve agreed with a hint of sadness, “this is just so wrong.”

“It truly is,” Colleen added before her gaze traveled to the package sitting before her, “Oh Eve, I
almost forgot. This is for you.”

“What is it?” Eve glanced over at the envelope.

“Ian asked me to give it to you before he signed out,” Colleen explained tearfully, “I’d almost
forgotten about it with all the police running around here, but now that you’re here...”

“Thank you Colleen,” Eve replied accepting the package as she touched Ian’s scribbling on the front
of the envelope. After a moment she tore into the package wondering what he’d left her as she
pulled out the papers that had been protected inside. Her eyes scanned the page as she felt her heart
nearly skip a beat, “oh my god.”

           “Something wrong,” Colleen asked.

“I need to see Chris,” Eve answered tucking the pages back inside as she headed off into the
           crowd.

“But Chris said.....” Colleen started watching her flee, “stay here.”

“Kevin, there you are,” Chris moved through the crowd as he noted Kevin and Lucy up ahead near
Garcia, “what’s going on? Eve, Jack and I found Gabriella, so what’s all this about.”

“We were wrong Chris,” Kevin answered poignantly as he held Lucy close to him, “we didn’t get it
           right.”

           “What are you talking about?”

“It wasn’t Gabriella,” Lucy added trying to control her voice as Kevin held her closer.

“But....” Chris started at a loss, “we both read.”

“What we though we needed to see, but if we would’ve looked into it further,” Kevin began as one
of Garcia’s men emerged from the closet with a curly dark wig in a plastic bag, “this was in her hand
           when I found her.”

Chris looked over to Kevin and he noted the blood stained letter before him with the words
“WRONG AGAIN” printed in what appeared to be blood. Chris shook his head, “Well if it wasn’t
           Gabriella, then who was it?”

“Chris maybe you should sit down for this,” Lucy started as Kevin took a step back finding himself
           overwhelmed.

“Lucy, just tell me,” Chris began raising his voice a bit, “if it wasn’t Gabriella, then who is in that
           closet?”

“Chris, it’s Tamara,” Lucy blurted out as the body was removed from the linen closet, “Tamara’s
           dead.”

                                      Chapter Six

“Chris talk to me,” Eve urged reaching out to touch him as they made their way home from the
           hospital, “please.”

“I’m fine Eve,” he answered emotionlessly as he drove along.

“Chris I know that’s not true. I know you’re upset about Tamara’s death,” Eve insisted watching
him closely, “even though she hurt you, I know that you cared about her.”

“Eve, it’s not that it’s.....” Chris gave her a look before turning his eyes towards the road once
           more.

           “It’s what...”

“The baby Eve,” Chris blurted out painfully, “Tamara’s dead which means the baby....”

“Never existed,” Eve cut him off as he pulled into the parking garage before he looked at her in
           disbelief.

“Eve, just because she’s gone doesn’t mean....”

“She was never pregnant Chris,” Eve blurted out once more, “She lied.”

“What do you mean she lied?”

“Chris, she was lying to you,” Eve reached for the envelope Colleen had given her earlier, “she was
just using that to try to keep you with her.”

           “But I thought....”

“Ian ran a pregnancy test,” Eve explained handing him the envelope, “he said he knew that he
shouldn’t be giving those results to me given his oath as a doctor, but given our situation, he said he
wanted us to be happy,” Eve admitted tearfully, “he just didn’t think that she was being upfront with
           us after the shooting.”

“So you’re saying,” Chris pulled out the page as he scanned it over.

“She was never pregnant Chris,” Eve nodded as the tears slipped down her cheeks, “she was never
carrying your child and all the lies and manipulations were just that...”

“Oh Eve...” Chris began at a loss as he looked to her, “I don’t know what to say or how to feel at
this moment. All this time I’ve been thinking about the child, about what I was going to do to protect
him or her from Tamara and now I come to discover that there never was a child, that all it
was...was just a game to her.”

“Chris, you had no idea,” Eve started.

“But Ian did,” Chris shook his head, “damn it. Why didn’t I see it? If Thornhart could see it and I
           couldn’t, what does that say....”

“It says in your heart you were trying to do the right thing,” she reached out to him, “things were so
complicated surrounding Hope that you just didn’t want to miss out on a chance to be a father. You
saw it as something that you were going to be there for from the beginning.”

“Eve, it wasn’t like that,” Chris reached out to her embracing her as his thoughts drifted to their
           daughter, “Hope.”

“Let’s go upstairs Chris,” Eve urged feeling her heart pounding beneath her chest, “we’ll just spend
our night with her and remember what it was that got us to this point with one another to begin with.
Let’s just shut out the world like we did the night Hope came into this world. It’ll just be the three of
           us.”

“I want that Eve,” Chris hugged her tighter, “I want that so much.”

Jack turned the key in the door as he stepped into his place. He slipped out of his jacket and tossed
it across the room not bothering to turn the light on as the pounding in his head took over any
thought that had been plaguing him from before. Right now he wanted to sleep, to forget the day and
try to stay focused, but unfortunately for him it was easier said than done. With a heavy sigh, he
kicked off his shoes as a faint light clicked on. He turned his eyes towards his bed and he found
           Livvie seated before him.

“Jack,” she spoke his name as she rushed over to him, “thank God you’re okay.”

“Livvie, I’m fine,” he blinked back, “wh-what are you doing here?”

“When I heard about what happened at the hospital and then when my father left the lighthouse,”
Livvie explained, “I was so worried.”

“Livvie, you shouldn’t be here right now.”

“Jack, I wanted to be,” she insisted.

“Your father probably needs you right now Livvie,” Jack urged once more.

“Are you trying to get rid of me Jack?” she frowned slightly, “I was just so worried...”

“I know you were Livvie,” he sighed embracing her once more, “it’s just been a really long night.”

“Then it’s true,” Livvie met his gaze, “Ian’s dead.”

“And Tamara too,” Jack admitted clearing his throat as he took a step back.

“This is just all so sudden,” Livvie frown noting his retreat, “and I heard them mention on the news
that it had something to do with my dad...a book he wrote.”

“General Homicide,” Jack nodded, “apparently there was a string of murders associated with it
before either one of us arrived in Port Charles.”

“No wonder my dad looked so upset when he and Lucy came home tonight,” Livvie frowned again,
           “I just never imagined...”

“He’s going through a tough time right now,” Jack added, “you really should be there with him
especially after what he witnessed tonight.”

“I just don’t know what to say,” Livvie confessed, “this kind of thing is just...well, he seems like the
only thing that would help him right now is Lucy. She knows how to deal with him.”

“She does seem to know him rather well,” Jack nodded in agreement, “but Livvie I’m sure having
you there would help him as well.”

“Jack, why do I get the distinct feeling you’re trying to get rid of me,” Livvie frowned once more, “I
thought you wanted to be with me.”

“I do Livvie, but it’s just...there are some thing I need to take care of, things that I really need to do
           on my own.”

“Jack,” she sighed, “what’s happening between us?”

“I don’t know Livvie,” he replied sharply, “why don’t you tell me?”

“If I knew, I would Jack. I just wish you’d open up to me.”

“Like you opened up with Michael.”

“Michael,” Livvie repeated blankly, “what does that have to do with anything?”

“I see how he looks at you Livvie.”

“Jack, he’s a priest and beyond that how many times do I have to tell you there is no other man for
me, but you. That story about a professor was just that. I love you.”

“Livvie,” Jack sighed as he looked away, “I’m sorry. I’m just under a lot of stress right now.”

“I can see that,” she reached out to him, “but I want to be able to help you Jack.”

“Livvie, look I just need some time to get my head on straight,” he turned to her, “okay?”

“Jack, why do I feel like I’m losing you,” Livvie met his eyes sadly, “it just feels like you keep
           slipping further away from me.”

“Doc,” Lucy started as she walked out onto the ledge finding Kevin looking out into the yard below.
She placed her hand on his shoulder, “Doc, this isn’t your fault.”

“Isn’t it? Lucy, you saw how everyone was looking at me,” Kevin sighed, “and I can’t say that I
blame them. After all the trouble my book caused before....”

“Greg Cooper caused the trouble Doc, not you.”

“But it was penned from my imagination, from my ideas,” Kevin looked to her, “I never should’ve
           wrote it.”

“Kevin, you can’t keep blaming yourself. All this torturing yourself,” Lucy reached out to him, “Doc,
you have to ease up on yourself just once in a while.”

           “Lucy...”

“I know what you’re going to say. You’re going to say that there was Ryan, Grace and now this
again, but don’t you see all of those things are beyond your control? How many times do you have
to travel down that road beating yourself up time and time again over something that wasn’t your
           doing.”

“Lucy, tonight never should’ve happened. Ian shouldn’t be dead.....”

“No he shouldn’t, but it is not your fault that some sick bastard decided to use a page from your
book and I swear once I get my hands on that son of a...”

“Lucy,” Kevin cut her off as he moved away from her, “that’s not the point.”

“The point is Kevin Collin that you sit here and find way to beat yourself up, to place the blame on
yourself when in reality you are not the one who does all of these things. Some person, some
twisted, nasty, psychotic person killed Ian, not you.”

“But they used my book to do it Lucy. They followed my words,” he snapped at her.

“Kevin,” she frowned as he turned away, “what’s this really about? I mean I understand you’re
upset, but there’s been something going on inside you for a while now. I tried to let you brood over
it on your own, but somehow I don’t think that’s helping you,” she stepped in closer to her, “Doc,
           what’s going on?”

“I’ve just had a lot on my mind,” Kevin sighed closing his eyes as the winds picked up around them.

“I can see that,” Lucy reached out to him, “why don’t you share it?”

“I don’t know if that’s going to help.”

“Doc, aren’t you the one always trying to convince me to open up? Well, maybe it’s time you did
           the same.”

“Lucy, remember how things were when I wrote my book?”

“How could I forget,” she frowned slightly, “it seemed like everything changed after....” she stopped
herself, “is that what you think is going on? That after tonight everything is going to change because
           someone...”

“This wasn’t at all in my plan for tonight,” Kevin faced her, “Lucy, I had these plans, these ideas...”

           “You can still share them.”

“But it’s not the same. This night wasn’t supposed to be tainted. It was supposed to be...” he
           sighed, “wonderful.”

“Doc, while tragedy struck, just the two of us together and knowing that we have a future makes me
realize how wonderful what we have truly is,” she reached out to hug him.

“I love you Lucy,” he said squeezing her close to him, “which is why it makes everything we’ve gone
           through so difficult.”

“But the point is we made it Doc. We survived it.”

“We did, but at what cost,” he felt the wind rise around them, “when I wrote that book it hurt you,
           didn’t it?”

“It’s ancient history,” Lucy answered softly.

“That’s just it,” Kevin searched her eyes, “it’s not that ancient. I can still see what it’s done to you.”

“Doc, we’re together again. Isn’t that what’s important?”

“But it doesn’t make up for what happened when I was with Eve,” Kevin sighed as he touched her
cheek, “when I was with Eve, it changed our lives.”

“Doc, we both hurt one another. It was just a bad case of the universe playing games with us and
giving us an unexpected twist,” she laced their fingers together, “but look at us now. We’re together
and stronger than ever. This time we’re going to make it Doc. You just have to believe that.”

“I do Lucy,” He replied hugging her close to him once more, “it’s the one thing I’m sure of.”

“So the murderer is still out there?” Karen asked as Chris and Eve entered the apartment.

“As far as we know,” Chris nodded in response.

“I just don’t understand how someone could do that,” Karen replied

“Tonight was awful,” Eve groaned slightly, “I just want to see Hope and try to forget about things
           for a while.”

“Well you could see her, but she’s sleeping,” Frank explained breaking his long silence, “We just
put her down less than a half an hour ago.”

“Thanks Frank,” Chris replied tired himself as he looked to Eve sensing her need to be alone,
“thank you both for watching Hope for us.”

“No problem,” Karen nodded, “and if you need anything else....”

“Thanks Karen,” Chris responded as he escorted Frank and Karen to the door. After they left he
looked back to his wife finding her over by the window looking out at the world below. Silently he
moved in behind her bringing his arms around her, “hey.”

“Hey,” she responded leaning into him.

“I know we weren’t planning on Hope being asleep,” Chris whispered, “but maybe it’ll give us some
           time to unwind.”

“Yeah that might be good,” she nodded.

           “You okay?”

“Not really,” she shook her head, “this is just all so much to absorb.”

“I know Eve,” he sighed, “believe me I know. On second thought, I’m going to go check in on
           Hope. Want to join me?”

“You go ahead,” Eve urged glancing over at him, “I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

           “You sure?”

“Yeah,” she nodded as he reluctantly left her to her thoughts. She moved across the living room
making her way towards the bar as she tried to shake the images she’d seen earlier in the evening. It
was just so hard to believe that Ian was gone, that he was dead and she’d never see him again.
Making her way over towards the bar, she looked at the folder Ian had left for her. Touching it
gently, she felt a poignant smile tug at her lips, “you really did want me to be happy, didn’t you?” she
questioned to herself as she noted the martini glass sitting behind the bar, “well I am Ian,” she spoke
softly as a tear slipped past her cheek, “I’m so sorry you’re gone. This wasn’t what I wanted,” she
cried out lightly as she looked down at the ring upon her finger and she remembered the things she’d
endured in finding her way home, “but for what it’s worth,” she said moving in behind the bar to mix
up a couple martinis, “thank you for allowing me to have my happily ever after.”

Hearing Chris in the room with Hope, Eve fixed up a couple drinks deciding that perhaps she’d use
this time as a moment of reflection as she thought of her relationship with Chris. While they’d gone
through a great many ups and downs to get where they were, there was no mistaking the magic
between them the night they’d created their daughter. That night they’d lost themselves in a passion
that they’d denied for so very long and it was in that single night that they’d made a miracle. Eve felt
a smile tug at her lips as she remembered making love to Chris and now as she found herself as his
wife, there were so many things to be grateful for in this life. She loved Chris and since they’d found
their way back to one another life she vowed never to waste a moment again.

“Did you get lost?” Chris asked returning from Hope’s room as he noted Eve standing beside the
           bar.

“Hmm...” she looked over to him, “what did you say?”

“I said I thought you were coming in to check in on Hope with me,” he reminded her as she circled
           around the bar.

“Well I was going to,” Eve admitted smiling at him tenderly, “but I was a bit distracted.”

“Distracted,” he repeated giving her a once over as she held out a martini towards him, “with?”

“With making these,” she confessed as he accepted his drink, “and with thoughts about us and that
           honeymoon we never had.”

           “Honeymoon,” Chris sipped his drink.

“That’s right,” she nodded in response making her way over to the sofa, “Chris, tonight when I saw
Ian in your office, it did something to me. Made me realize so many things...”

“Me too Eve,” Chris confessed thinking back to the grizzly scene that they’d witnessed.

“I didn’t realize until we came home just how wonderful we really have it. I mean we’re a family
           now.”

“Indeed we are,” Chris agreed ,“Hope looked so beautiful that I couldn’t bear to walk away from
her so soon,” he admitted pressing past the bar as he looked to her, “what about you?”

“What about me?” Eve questioned glancing up over her shoulder at him.

“Sleep? Have you heard of it?” Chris offered with a light smile, “you should try it sometime. At least
before Hope gets up again for her next feeding, although I can cover that if you’d like,” he insisted
           moving in beside her.

“You’re too good to me Chris,” Eve offered with a smile.

“Not nearly good enough,” Chris answered placing his hand over hers upon her leg, “but I’m
           trying.”

“Chris, you’re above and beyond any and all of my expectations,” Eve admitted with a soft sigh, “I
don’t know what I’d do without you.”

“Well lucky for you there’s no reason to ponder that thought as I’m right here,” Chris offered up
with a smile before he noticed the tension behind her eyes, “come here,” he urged reaching out to
her shoulders as he began to massage them gently.

“Chris, I don’t know if that’s such a...” she let out a soft moan as she had forgotten just how nice his
fingers had felt during his stellar massages, “oh Chris...”

“And here you wanted me to stop,” he teased lightly as his hands played over her, “so what’s really
bothering you Lambert? Still thinking about Ian?”

“Not really. I mean I was, but...”

           “But what?”

“Nothing,” she shrugged as she felt his fingers coaxing her to relax within his arms, to just melt
           against his touch.

“Liar. Don’t you know by now you were never any good at doing that with me?” He questioned
           curiously.

“And here I thought I was able to pull a fast one over you,” she half laughed as he ceased motion
over her shoulders, “hey I was just enjoying that.”

“I’m fully aware of that,” Chris replied glancing her over carefully, “Which is why I thought I’d try to
coax out of you whatever is going on before you end up snoozing on me. What’s wrong?”

“I guess I was just thinking about everything, about tonight with Ian and Tamara dying and then with
my being here again--with us being married,” Eve admitted with a sigh, “it’s just...”

“Different,” Chris finished watching her, “I realize this is all happening so fast.”

“No, no it’s not Chris,” she shook her head, “I mean you and I, well we’ve waited a long time for
this, it’s just the last time I was here,” Eve turned her eyes towards him, “the last time we lived
           together we weren’t...”

“What?” he questioned with a soft smile.

“We weren’t,” she felt the word on the tip of her tongue before she chickened out blurting out the
           next available word, “parents.”

“Parents,” he nodded in response, “well I think Hope is adjusting to us just fine. She’s had a while
to get use to us being around, wouldn’t you say?”

“Yes, but I mean Hope and I have only been living here a couple days now and already it’s like a
routine for her to have us both around to be a family.”

“That isn’t going to change Eve,” Chris hesitated, “is it? I mean I‘m not falling short as a husband,
           am I?”

“No, no oh god,” Eve turned to face him, “it’s just...”

“Just what?” Chris questioned searching her eyes as he sensed her apprehension. He reached out to
touch her cheek, “Eve, what is it?”

“It’s nothing really,” Eve answered as her gaze drifted from his.

“Now I know you’re lying,” Chris coaxed her to look at him once more.

“Well, it’s just that we’ve been so exhausted lately in between all the tests at the hospital and with
Ian‘s death, we’ve both been so run down. Things just keep coming up and then it’s like nothing is
ever as secure as we want it to be. Take tonight for example. When I saw Ian there like that I found
my heart breaking at the idea it could’ve been you.”

“But it wasn’t me Eve,” Chris cupped her face in his hands, “we are going to survive this.”

“How can you be so sure? It seems like when we finally were able to settle things down a bit, well,
chaos surrounds us and beyond that Hope just seems to be taking up most of our time and I just
hope we‘re doing a good job with her, like we‘re doing the right thing.”

“I think we are Eve,” Chris reminded her, “she’s a happy baby.”

“I know and don’t get me wrong. I wouldn’t change that for the world, not for a thing at all Chris,
but well with all these crises coming up, we haven’t really had a lot of time to discuss...”

“To discuss?” he raised a curious brow.

“Us,” she met his eyes as her face felt instantly flushed, “I mean granted it’s kind of gone without
           saying, but....”

“You’d like some kind of reaffirmation about the two of us,” Chris searched her eyes once more.

“Chris, I know you love me and I love you too,” Eve reached for his hand as she turned around on
the couch to face him completely, “you are an amazing father and a wonderful, wonderful man to be
           with...”

           “But?”

“There aren’t any buts....” Eve shrugged, “not really anyways.”

“No, wait a second. That sounds like there’s a complaint coming on.”

“No it’s not,” she shook her head, “that’s not it at all. It’s just...”

“Just what?” he questioned searching her eyes as he touched her cheek gently, “Eve, tell me.”

“Chris, it’s just that you and I haven’t been, well, together....” her face was flooded with a heat as
she met his concerned brown eyes, “I mean at least not since the night we conceived Hope and
           well...”

“Well?” Chris repeated fighting to suppress the grin tugging at his lips.

“Never mind,” she shook her head as she looked away.

“Eve, are you asking me to make love to you?” Chris questioned noting the way she’d seemed
almost shy about it as he squeezed her hand in his, “is that what you’re trying to say?”

“Chris, it’s not just that I’m trying to ask you to...” she began as he reached out to her drawing her
close to him as his lips met hers in a tender, heartfelt kiss. She took in the sweetness of his kiss as
her arms instinctively wrapped around him keeping him close to her. As they parted she still held him
as their eyes remained fixed upon each other.

“Eve, I just wanted to give you time to adjust to things,” Chris confessed placing a feathery light kiss
over her cheek across her forehead to the tip of her nose before meeting her lips again, “I didn’t
want to pressure you or rush you in any way especially after you were worried about things the
other day and then after tonight when you saw Ian...”

“It just made me see how important things for us really are. You aren’t rushing me,” Eve replied with
an ironic laugh, “though I’d almost wish you would’ve considered it.”

“Now hold on,” Chris gave her a pointed look, “I never once said that I hadn’t considered it
because there is not a minute that goes by when I’m not thinking about ravishing you in one way or
the other. I just didn’t want to come on to you like a dog in heat. Believe me Eve,” he touched her
cheek, “there hasn’t been a minute that’s passed where I haven’t wanted to share at least a small
           part of myself with you.”

“Chris,” she replied softly as she pressed her hand over his cupping it to her face.

“I love you Ramsey,” Chris insisted with all the devotion he could muster up as he held her close to
him, “more than I’d ever imagined possible. You and Hope are the world to me.”

“As you are for me,” Eve admitted with a soft smile, “Chris, I’ve waited so long to have this, to have
a family, someone to love, who loves me in return...”

“And I do,” he confessed capturing her lips in a kiss, “I love every part of you.”

“Chris, it’s just that last time,” she returned his kisses, “last time we did things so wrong...well,” she
hesitated, “not wrong because we have our Hope and I wouldn’t change that for anything, but when
           we made love...”

“We weren’t able to be free to give in to everything we’d had alive between us,” Chris finished
searching her eyes, “we gave each other a magical gift that night, but never once did we say the
words that have filled our hearts for so long.”

“I love you Chris,” Eve insisted desperately, “please don’t ever doubt that for a second.”

“I don’t doubt that or you,” Chris whispered capturing her face in his hands as he kissed her once
more, “I want you to believe that. I want to show you the kind of love you’ve waited a lifetime for
           Eve.”

“You already have by giving me Hope,” Eve admitted with a soft smile, “she’s the most amazing
little angel I could’ve been given.”

“She is,” Chris agreed as his fingers traced her lips, “but you’re my angel too Eve and you deserve a
love that goes beyond the moon and the stars.”

“I have that,” Eve answered with a smile.

“True, but tonight,” he leaned forward before rising from the couch. He tugged on her arm urging
her to follow before he scooped her up within the confines of his strong, powerful yet gentle arms,
“I’m going to take you to heaven,” he whispered sealing his promise with a kiss as he held her close
to him vowing to love her with all he was as he needed her to see that she was his world.

“I love you Chris,” Eve whispered as his lips captured hers once more.

“And I shall love you forever,” he offered pressing her against him as they found themselves
wrapped up in the magic of things to come.

I spent my life trying to avoid it
I always said it was wrong for me
A sign of weakness that's how I saw it
And weak was something I didn't want to be.....

Eve could feel the warmth in his touch as he held her keeping her close to him as they headed
towards their room. She found herself lost in his dark eyes as he kept her within his arms never
breaking the contact between them. As they entered the room, he gently lowered her to the floor as
his hands gingerly took in her curves.

“You’re so beautiful,” Chris confessed leaning in to kiss her full lips before his mouth wandered over
her skin tracing her neck with feathery light kisses, “you have no idea how long I’ve waited for us to
           have this.”

“To be in love,” Eve breathed tipping her head back as he captured the surface of her neck in a
heated kiss drawing forth a soft moan from her.

“I’ve been in love with you for what feels like forever,” He confessed as his fingers slipped over her
waist and he cupped her to him. After a moment he began tracing her curves as he took his time
exploring the woman he loved so much, “there hasn’t been a moment where you haven’t been in my
           thoughts Eve.”

“I’ve longed to hear those words from you, to feel them,” Eve blurted out closing her eyes as she
found herself lost in his touch.

“Which is why I intend to show you the depths of each one of them tonight,” Chris insisted bringing
his lips back to hers once more as he coaxed another passionate response from her mouth. Their
kiss deepened as his explorations of the sweetness she had to offer him as his hand slipped over her
cheek molding her close to him. As they parted breathlessly he searched her eyes finding so much
revealed to him as he felt her palm upon his chest, “I love you.”

“I love you Chris,” Eve whispered feeling her heart racing as she tugged at his shirt coaxing it up his
defined form as her fingers slipped beneath the material to feel the warmth of him revealed to her.

It wasn't love I was runnin’ from
I was just afraid to need someone
Now it feels so good to feel
The need to trust somebody and open up my heart
The need to share my secrets down to the deepest part
I can give, I can take,
           Now it's okay to say
           That sometimes I feel weak
When you're the reason for the need

Their lips met again in a heated exploration as Eve’s hands crept up longing to feel more of him as
he moved his hands in over hers urging her to release him as they parted once more. He met her
eyes for a brief moment before he tugged his shirt over his head tossing it across the room as her
hands began their journey over the warm muscled planes of his chest. He let out a low primal moan
as his skilled hands pressed around her hips hugging her body close to his as their lips met in another
heated kiss. He crushed her to him as she found her heart racing in her chest at the feel of him so
close to her after all this time. The first time around they’d been far too drunk to really, truly savor
one another, but now, now she was certain that she wouldn’t lose sight of a thing as she held him
           close to her.

“Chris,” she breathed his name as he withdrew his lips from hers and their eyes connected once
           more.

“Tonight is about showing you what you mean to me,” he explained as his hands tapered off beneath
her blouse. She let out a soft sigh as his index finger brushed upon her abdomen tenderly before he
shifted his hand to feel more of her. She watched his face as he took careful consideration in
touching her, feeling her as his other arm rose beside her keeping her close to him before their
mouths met again in a longing need, “I love you,” he whispered bringing his arms around her as he
cupped her close to him once more bringing her off her feet as he carried her towards the cushiony
           bed.

“I love you,” she breathed once more finding herself swept away by the fantasy as he carefully
lowered her back upon the pillows and comforter. She glanced up at him as her hair cascaded
around her and extending her arms out to him, she expected him to join her as he accepted her palm
kissing the top of it before his kisses tapered off over her slender arm.

“You’re so beautiful,” he whispered moving in over her as his kisses trailed over her.

Their eyes met for a moment as Chris’ fingers traced over her curves taking their time to learn all of
her to his touch before he began to unfasten the buttons on her shirt exposing more of her creamy
soft flesh to him. She took in a breath as his eyes feasted upon her taking her in as though she was a
luscious morsel that he was certain to take his time in savoring. Her eyes followed him as he leisurely
parted the material of her blouse revealing more of her to him. Meeting her eyes once more as a
pleased smile curled over his lips, Chris noted that Eve drew in a sharp breath feeling as his eyes
devoured her with hungry desire. She opened her mouth to speak but as the sound rose from her
lips it transformed into a soft sigh as Chris lowered his lips to her skin.

“You’re even more incredible than I remembered,” Chris whispered just above her softness as his
kisses tapered off over her body, “you truly are a dream come true Eve.”

“You’re my dream Chris,” Eve confessed as her body writhed against his lips needing to show him
just what his love had done for her. He laced their hands together as his mouth captured hers in a
           ravenous kiss.

You had the strength to cry on my shoulder
You weren't ashamed to lean on me
The honesty kept drawing us closer
And I saw how easy reaching out could be
You showed me love's not about control
Holding on to you is how I let go
And it feels so good to feel
The need to trust somebody and open up my heart
The need to share my secrets down to the deepest part
I can give, I can take,
           Now it's okay to say
           That sometimes I feel weak
           When you're the reason for....

“Eve, I was born to love you,” he whispered touching her cheek as her eyes connected with his and
he found himself swept away by a love unlike anything he’d known.

“We belong together,” she insisted bringing her lips down to his as her she had finally found herself
home again within his arms as Chris Ramsey was truly her heart’s desire, “for always,” she breathed
as his arms enfolded her keeping her close to him as she knew that her life would never be the same
           again.

The need to trust somebody and open up my heart
The need to share my secrets down to the deepest part
I can give, I can take,
           Now it's okay to say
           That sometimes I feel weak
           When you're the reason for
           The reason for
           The need....

Jack Ramsey stood beside his car on the docks as he listened to the sounds of the tide rolling in.
Something was wrong. The meeting was supposed to be half an hour ago. What could be going on?
Suddenly he heard a creaking sound behind him. He turned to see the shadow emerge from the
darkness that had surrounded him. With a frown, Jack turned to meet his guest.

           “You’re late,” he replied.

“Traffic was a bitch,” the visitor replied.

“At this hour,” he replied skeptic, “try again.”

“Maybe I’m just not so eager to be seeing you again Jack.”

“Like you have a choice in the matter,” he argued, “this is beyond our control.”

           “I see that.”

“That’s all you have to say?” Jack questioned in disbelief.

“What would you like me to say?”

“That we’ve got some kind of answers to all of this,” Jack frowned slightly running his fingers
through his hair. “After the night I’ve been through, I need them.”

“Considering what answers I have,” the visitor stepped forward, “I can assure you that you aren’t
           going to like them.”

                                   Chapter Seven

Eve rolled over in bed as she began stretching her legs out underneath the blanket. She let out a
tired yawn as she felt the strong arms slip around her waist hugging her in closer to him. She let out a
soft smile as Chris pressed a kiss upon her neck.

“Good morning beautiful,” he whispered in her ear as he squeezed her to him.

“Morning,” a smile overtook her as she turned her head slightly to look over her shoulder at him,
           “handsome.”

“Who me?” He teased lightly before gently easing her onto her back as he hovered over her
           pressing his lips to hers.

“No, the other man of my dreams that I spent last night making mad, passionate love to,” she teased
as he leaned in to kiss her again.

“There had better not be any other man,” he warned lightheartedly as he kept his lips just above
           hers.

“And why is that?” Eve gave him a curious look.

“Because you have all the man you need right here in your arms,” Chris informed her as he captured
her mouth in a hungry kiss.

“Indeed I do,” Eve moaned against his lips upon hearing the soft sounds of crying over the baby
monitor, “it sounds like someone feels left out.”

“She’s just reminding her mother of the good thing she has before her,” Chris teased before kissing
Eve one last time, “Shall I go get our princess?”

“I think she’d like that,” Eve nodded in response as she drew him in for one more kiss, “although I
hate the thought of letting go of you for even one second.”

“Think of all I’m bringing back with me,” Chris offered up, “I can get Hope and then we could
spend the morning together here in this bed, just the three of us. I mean because I’ve said before
there’s always room for three in bed,” he winked at her.

“Okay go get our daughter before I am unable to resist the urge to smack her father for his
suffocating ego,” Eve gave him a stern look.

“As you wish,” he touched her cheek before dropping a soft kiss over her forehead, “miss me.”

“Always,” she mused taking in the incredible view before her as she watched Chris slip out from
underneath the blankets giving her a glimpse of the form she’d come to admire fro quite some time.

A proud smile tugged at Eve’s lips as she rolled onto her stomach and she watched him getting
dressed as the realization that he was hers, finally hers set in. Life with Chris had been so perfect
and she had found that they were happy, truly happy, something Eve hadn’t imagined happening in
this lifetime after all the pain and suffering that had followed her. She watched as Chris moved
towards the door blowing her a kiss before leaving the room.

“Be right back,” he promised her as he left to retrieve their daughter and Eve rolled back onto her
back letting out a happy sigh as she thought of their past few months together.

At first things had been so complicated, but after Hope’s birth things had fallen into place for them.
When Eve had broken the news to Ian about her and Chris, he’d seemed so hurt and she’d hated
breaking his heart, but in retrospect it was the best thing for them all. Though Ian was gone, she
knew that she’d been meant to be with Chris, to have their family and now it was happening. Ian
had taken it rather gracefully though his pain had been evident. When the DNA test confirmed what
Eve knew in her heart to be true, Ian wished her well with Chris before he left town going back to
Doctor’s Without Limits. Eve had wanted the best for Ian and somehow while their parting had
taken it’s toll on him, in the end she hoped he’d found some peace despite his untimely demise.

“Look who’s here mommy,” Chris called out interrupting her thoughts as he stepped into the room
with Hope nestled in comfortably within his arms, “we’re all dry now and ready to spend a day of
           adventure with the family.”

“Hey sweetie,” Eve called out to their daughter as Hope possessively curled into her father with a
soft giggle building over her little features, “well it looks like you’re in a good mood this morning. It
must be all the special attention you’re getting from daddy.”

“She and I were just discussing our honeymoon,” Chris explained with a proud smile as Hope
reached for his hand bringing his index finger into her tiny mouth and nibbling on it before she
released it with a loud chuckle.

“Our honeymoon?” Eve raised her brow curiously as she looked to Hope, “and just what has daddy
been telling you about our honeymoon? It better not have anything to do with last night.”

“That’s not it, but I was telling her about our vacation plans.”

           “Such as?”

“She’ll never tell mommy,” Chris answered with a teasing grin, “it’s our secret about where we’re
taking your mommy, isn’t it Hope?”

“Oh come on. That’s not fair, leaving me out of the loop,” Eve pouted watching him slip in beneath
the blankets beside her as Hope sat upon his chest clapping her hands together. Eve reached out to
her daughter taking a tiny finger in her hand as she smiled, “you’ll tell mommy all of daddy’s secrets,
           won’t you?”

“Not a chance,” Chris gave Eve a look as Hope let out another laugh, “her lips are sealed.”

“Oh I’m sure I can talk it out of her,” Eve insisted with a smile as she watched the delight bubble
over in her daughter’s eyes, “we’ll have a girl’s night and she’ll spill all to me.”

“No she won’t,” Chris answered with a proud smile, “She’s daddy’s girl.”

“She may be daddy’s girl, but mommy is her buddy and she wouldn’t want to keep things from her
           mommy either,” Eve insisted.

“This time she’s going to darling,” Chris answered bending over to kiss the tip of Eve’s nose,
“because we put a lot of work into making this special for you.”

“Which is why I think you two should let me help in the process,” Eve urged, “I mean it’s not
everyday a girl marries the man of her dreams and has her happily ever after.”

“True, but it’s not everyday that Hope and I get to spoil you either,” Chris gave her a look, “Eve,
just trust me. You’ll love it.”

“I already do,” Eve offered with a bright smile, “I love everything you’ve given me Chris.”

“You’ve given me the world Eve,” Chris replied bending over to kiss her tenderly as Hope let out a
soft squeal. He laughed lightly as he looked to Hope clapping her hands together, “it looks like our
daughter wants to voice her opinion here as well.”

“I can see that,” Eve answered with a soft laugh as she reached out to Hope, “come here baby girl,”
she hoisted Hope from her father’s chest into her arms and she kissed the tiny strands of auburn
ringlets around their daughter’s chubby cheeks.

Hope giggled in response to Eve’s attentions and Chris propped himself up on his elbow to just
watch the two of them as he sat in awe of the two women in his life. Never had he imagined that life
would be so perfect for him. He’d always thought that somehow one day he would wake up to
discover his life with Eve had been nothing more than a dream, a dream he wished would never end
as he watched them together. He loved Eve and Hope with all that we was and now for the first
time in his life he was finally happy, finally able to have the kind of life he’d always wished for. It was
Eve that had made it possible for him.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” Eve questioned curiously as she turned her eyes towards
           Chris.

“Like what?” Chris questioned with a half smile.

“Like the cat who ate the canary,” Eve answered with a playful laugh.

“Well I was just thinking about how truly blessed I am to have you and Hope,” Chris admitted
proudly, “you have no idea what having you both means to me.”

“I think I might have some idea,” Eve answered with a soft smile as she reached out to touch his
           cheek, “I feel it too.”

“So tell me again, what time were you and Karen going shopping?” Chris questioned giving her one
           brief kiss.

“She and Frank had an appointment with Dr. Neumann at noon, so we were thinking about maybe
two thirty,” Eve admitted with a shrug, “what about you and Jack?”

“Jack and I, well, that’s a whole other ball game,” Chris sighed, “actually we were thinking about
kicking it back here with the ballgame maybe ordering a pizza, having a few beers..”

“You’d better not. You have to be there for the fitting at three Chris,” Eve shot him a scathing look.

“Do you honestly think I’d miss that?” Chris questioned with a hint of amusement.

“You’d better not,” Eve gave him another look before focusing her attention on Hope, “but you’ll
make sure that daddy behaves won’t you? You’ll see to it that he’s a good boy.”

“Eve, it’s been a long time since I’ve been a good boy,” Chris laughed lightly, “and besides I thought
that was part of what you loved about me.”

“You’ll behave,” Eve insisted hugging her daughter close to him, “and we’ll meet up at Windhams
like we talked about for Hope’s fitting.”

“I still don’t know why it isn’t done yet since we already did the wedding thing,” Chris insisted
           looking to her.

“I realize we did, but I thought we’d get something a bit more romantic going.”

“Getting married in the ER wasn’t romantic enough?” Chris teased, “how many people do you
           know got married like that?”

“Not many which is why I don’t feel like telling Hope there were no pictures of the day her daddy
and I got married the first time because he had a big ole bullet hole in his chest and an IV line that
got in the way of the camera.”

“At least it wasn’t the catheter,” Chris teased as she nudged him.

“Hmm...giving me ideas for the second ceremony huh Ramsey,” Eve gave him a look.

“Well you know we could always just skip out on this place and go to the islands somewhere and
get married in the tropics, so that we wouldn’t have to worry about the hospital coming up again.”

“We could, but don’t you think that would be in bad taste to take off now,” Eve frowned slightly,
“especially after what’s been happening with the investigation.”

“Eve,” Chris sighed as he looked to her, “it’s more reason to get you two out of town. I have some
time coming up to take off and if there’s some manic running around, the last thing I want is my wife
and daughter in his path of destruction.”

“Chris, I just...” Eve sighed, “I already called Shelly when you were at the hospital and she put the
           wheels into action.”

“Shelly’s coming into town?” Chris mused with a smile, “now that in itself is worth risking the wrath
of a serial killer seeing as I’ve yet to meet the little Lambert sister.”

“Chris, come on. It’s very important to me,” Eve urged.

“I’m sure it is. I mean if you’re willing to take on a serial killer and all just to make sure Shelly
doesn’t miss our wedding the second time around.”

“Hope, cover your ears,“ Eve reached out to her daughter as she looked to Chris, “You’re being an
           ass.”

“An ass you say? Hey now is that any way to talk to the man you pledged the rest of your life with?”

“In your case,” she gave him a pointed look, “yes. I haven’t seen my sister in nearly five years and
I’ll be damned if I’m going to let anyone interfere with my seeing her again.”

“There’s the spirit I love about you,” Chris mused watching the determination behind her eyes,
“you’ve really missed her haven’t you?”

“Immensely, though I’m somewhat grateful that she missed out on part of my time here in Port
Charles. She wouldn’t have approved of a few things.”

“Like Kevin,” Chris raised a brow.

“Or Ian,” Eve stopped herself, “I shouldn’t have said that.”

“No Eve, it’s okay. I mean I know you didn’t mean anything by that,” Chris reached out to her,
“your sister just has taste is all your saying. That’s all.”

“Which means she’s probably going to think I lost my mind because I married you,” Eve teased in
           response.

“Cute Ramsey, but for the record, I don’t care what Shelly thinks. It’s too late to change things
           now.”

“Are you implying you’d like to?” Eve raised a brow.

“Not a chance,” he shook his head.

“Good, because I was afraid I’d have to beat some sense into you,” she teased.

“Feisty,” he mused with a smile, “I like you that way.”

“Glad to hear you say it, however you’ll get a taste of my wicked side if you’re late for the fitting
           today.”

“In that case maybe I’ll take my time.”

“Chris,” Eve chastised, “it’s important. I want you there when we get Hope’s dress from the
           designer.”

“They should’ve had her dress finished by now.”

“They would’ve except daddy insisted upon nothing but the best,” Eve reminded him as she laughed
           lightly.

“Well she’s our little princess,” Chris answered with a smile, “how could we afford to allow anything
           but the best?”

Hope clapped her hands together approvingly as Chris reached out to her, “See what I mean?”

“We’re going to give her the best of everything,” Eve agreed with a smile, “she’s never going to
have to experience half of what we went through.”

“Eve, I promised you a life of happy days ahead of you, and I’m going to stick to my word Eve.
This is only the beginning for us.”

“I realize that,” Eve smiled leaning over to kiss him, “I love you Ramsey.”

“And I love you too Ramsey.”

Kevin sat at the breakfast table reading his newspaper as he heard the footsteps in the distance. He
glanced up to see Livvie standing before him, “Good morning.”

“Morning,” Livvie replied noting his serious expression, “read anything interesting?”

“Not really,” Kevin shook his head as he set the paper down.

“I take it they’re still talking about the book huh?” Livvie took a seat across from him at the table.

“Yeah,” Kevin nodded, “it seems that things have returned to the chaos they were before.”

“With the murders,” she half questioned as she reached for a bagel, “do you think it’s a copycat of
           the previous murders?”

“It would appear to be so,” Kevin answered shifting uncomfortably in his seat.

“I’m sorry. I know how hard it was on you before,” Livvie began seeing something in his features as
she continued the conversation, “I read up on it when I first came to town and I know...”

“Can we just talk about something else,” Kevin cut her off.

“Sure,” she nodded, “whatever you like dad.”

“Livvie,” he sighed, “I’m sorry if I come across as being terse...”

“It’s okay,” Livvie replied reaching out to pour herself a glass of juice, “you don’t have to explain.”
A silence fell over them as Livvie sipped her juice. Finally she asked him, “So where’s Lucy?”

“Shopping,” Kevin replied giving her a look, “she had a few things she wanted to take care of this
           morning.”

           “Oh, I see.”

           “So how are you Livvie?”

“I’m, well, I’m okay,” she shrugged.

“Okay huh?” he eyed her closely, “now why am I not convinced about that?”

“I am. Really nothing’s really wrong.”

           “Except?”

“Except,” she repeated meeting his eyes, “Jack. He’s been acting really strange lately and I don’t
           understand why.”

“Jack,” Kevin repeated with a frown, “I see. Strange how?”

“It’s no big deal,” she shrugged.

“No, I think it is. I mean if it’s obviously bothering you...”

“He just seems...different,” Livvie sighed, “I mean we’ve been having our share of problems lately,
but well now he just seems...distant.”

“Have you talked to him about it,” Kevin questioned welcoming the change in conversation as he
           looked to his daughter.

“He says not to worry about it, but ever since Chris almost died,” Livvie paused, “he’s just well,
           changed.”

“Honey, if he’s not being good to you,” Kevin started up.

“No, it’s not that. Not at all,” she shook her head, “it’s just...”

           “Just what?”

“Just that Jack and I seem like we’re drifting apart and I hate it.”

“I’m sure things will work themselves out,” Kevin tried to assure her despite his own lingering
           doubts about Jack Ramsey’s worth.

“I hope you’re right,” Livvie nodded trying to contain herself as the front door burst open and Lucy
           rushed into the lighthouse.

“Doc, you have to see this,” Lucy announced tossing her bags across the room as she rushed over
towards the television, “I was driving home listening to a Beach Boys song on the radio as I
remembered that time I suckered you into going to that little Luau party at Luke’s when it hit me. I
was in the middle of Good Vibrations when boom, smack, this just burst on the radio and suddenly
I knew I had to get home to talk to you. Granted I got pulled over on the way in here, but I
explained to the officer that this was a life and death emergency and that if he didn’t let me get here
right away, I would see to it that I had his badge for it as something of this importance just could not
           wait...”

“Well hello to you too Lucy,” Livvie half laughed watching Lucy parade around the room as she
           reached for the television remote.

“You can see this too,” Lucy insisted turning on the television as she walked over to Kevin tugging
on his arm, “come on Doc. It’s almost over.”

“Lucy,” Kevin moved to bite his toast as she yanked him up from his seat causing him to drop the
piece of bread in his hand.

“Now Doc,” Lucy insisted as she led him across the room towards the television, “look.”

“What?” he asked as he turned his eyes towards the television and he noted the General Homicide
book cover up on the screen.

“And in related news the recurrence of a Port Charles nightmare has seemingly been brought to end.
The rumors that were speculated abut a repeat set of copycat murders based upon the grizzly
killings of ninety eight and Dr. Kevin Collins best selling novel General Homicide were put to rest
last night when police investigations into the murders of Dr. Ian Thornhart and Dr. Tamara Moore
           revealed foul play....”

           “What is this?” Kevin asked.

           “Just watch,” Lucy urged.

“....the police have issued a formal statement that during the coroner’s investigation, Dr. Tamara
Moore, who was believed to have been a victim, had self inflicted the fatal wound upon her after
murdering co-worker Dr. Ian Thornhart. Moore was up for trial in the hit and run accident with Dr.
Karen Wexler along with the near death shooting of ex-fiancee of Dr. Christopher Ramsey last
           month......”

“At first we’d believed these unfortunate incidents were connected the previous General Homicide
murders,” a representative from the PCPD explained, “but with further investigations we’d
discovered that last night’s incident was indeed not a double homicide, but rather a murder/suicide.”

“Murder suicide,” Kevin repeated in confusion.

“Don’t you see Doc,” Lucy looked to him, “this wasn’t about you. This wasn’t about the book.
           Tamara did this.”

           “They’re sure?” Kevin questioned unconvinced.

“They found a note Kevin,” Lucy explained with a nod, “I heard it on the radio that they found a
note where she confessed to what she’d done.”

“A note,” Kevin repeated disbelieving, “Lucy but we found her last night and the only note we found
was the one in her hand.”

“You found her?” Livvie questioned with wide eyes.

“It was horrible,” Lucy nodded, “she was in the closet and....” she stopped herself as Kevin gave
her a warning look, “never mind.”

“Dad, what’s going on?” Livvie looked to her father, “I thought that you believed it had to do with
           your book.”

“But it obviously didn’t,” Lucy added seeing Kevin’s puzzled expression, “clearly there was
something we missed last night, but it makes sense that Tamara did that horrible thing to Ian. She
           was crazy....”

           “Troubled,” Kevin corrected her firmly.

“Whatever Doc,” Lucy shook her head, “the point is that she was out of this world. She ran over
Karen and shot Chris, not that I blame her for the latter since he is a sneaky, slimy little weasel
           but....”

“Lucy,” Kevin gave her a look, “enough.”

“Doc, I’m just saying,” she stepped forward reaching out to him, “you can stop beating yourself up
over this now. We know what happened and it’s over.”

“Is it?” Kevin looked to her for a moment.

“Of course it is Doc. We can start our lives now,” Lucy urged seeing the darkness behind her eyes.

“Perhaps,” Kevin gave her a quick kiss, “but I think I’m going to go talk to Mac.”

           “Now?” Lucy frowned.

“I think there’s no better time than the present,” he nodded giving her one last kiss, “I’ll be back
           soon.”

“But Doc....” she started as he made his way towards the door grabbing a jacket as he walked out
           of the lighthouse.

“What just happened here?” Livvie questioned looking over to Lucy.

“I’m not sure,” Lucy frowned, “I thought he’d be relieved.”

“Yeah me too, but he seems more perplexed,” Livvie noted.

           “He does,” Lucy agreed.

“Do you think it’s true? That Dr. Moore did all of that,” Livvie questioned with a frown.

“I’m not sure,” Lucy admitted turning her eyes back towards the door, “but for Doc’s sake, I hope
that’s really the end of this.”

“So what are all the bags about?” Livvie questioned changing the subject.

“Well tonight Mary and Victor are planning a surprise for,” Lucy’s eyes lit up, “can you keep a
           secret?”

“Of course I can Lucy,” Livvie nodded, “what’s going on?”

“I’ll tell you in the car,” Lucy replied walking over to the desk and jotting down a note for Kevin,
“Hopefully Doc won’t realize we’re gone while he’s out because this is going to be somewhat of a
           surprise to him to.”

“Lucy, what’s going on,” Livvie asked again peeking over Lucy’s shoulder at the note.

“You’ll see,” Lucy smiled as she set the note down for Kevin to see, “Come on Livvie. Boy oh boy
do we have a lot to do today.”

Karen stood outside the door knocking for the third time as she checked her watch again. She let
out a sigh as she pounded on the apartment door once more. After a moment the door opened and
she noted Jack standing before her with Hope in his arms.

“They’re running behind,” Jack explained holding his niece close to him, “Eve was having problems
with her dress and Chris decided to help her out,” a frown crossed his features, “that was twenty
           five minutes ago.”

“I’ll bet,” Karen groaned making her way through the door as she held her hand over her abdomen,
“I know what those two are like when they get distracted with one another.”

“Tell me about it,” Jack muttered motioning to the couch, “why don’t you take a seat? Maybe get a
           load off for a while.”

“Jack, I’m pregnant not disabled,” Karen reminded him with a light laugh, “though sometimes it feels
like I’ve got the weight of the world on my shoulders.”

“How’s Frank doing?” Jack questioned as he closed the door behind her.

“Frank’s well, Frank,” Karen couldn’t help but laugh, “he and Mary are working in the nursery this
afternoon and he’s beyond ecstatic about the twins.”

“As he should be,” Chris’ voice interrupted as he entered the room, “Karen, you’re looking lovely
           today.”

“No beach ball remarks on what I‘ll look like in a few more months?” Karen gave him a pointed
           look.

“A woman never looks more beautiful than when she’s glowing in pregnancy,” Chris answered with
a smile, “of course the fact that you’re having Frank Scanlon’s children speaks volumes about you.”

“Hush up,” Eve chastised as she stepped out of the room finishing up with her earring, “never mind
him. He just woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning,” Eve teased brushing her hand
           against Chris’ shoulder.

“I woke up on yours,” Chris gave her a teasing look.

“Exactly, which is why you should be nice,” Eve reminded him.

“Of course Frank has some choice words about Chris as well,” Karen added up with a soft laugh.

“I’m certain they’re nothing but jealousies,” Chris answered confidently as he kissed Eve on the
cheek, “I’m not concerned in the least.”

“Of course not,” Karen shook her head as she looked to Eve, “you about ready?”

“Almost,” Eve crossed the room making her way over to Jack as she reached for Hope bringing her
into her arms, “are you going to be a good girl today?”

Hope smiled in response as Eve kissed her chubby cheek.

“Now you be good for daddy and Uncle Jack,” Eve continued instructing her daughter, “and make
           sure that they behave.”

“When don’t we,” Chris offered up as Eve shot him a look.

“I know you too well Ramsey,” Eve answered up.

“She’s got your number Chris,” Jack teased with a hearty laugh.

“Now before I give you to your daddy to baby-sit him and Uncle Jack, should we show Karen
what you made for her yesterday,” Eve explained carrying Hope towards the kitchen table as Eve
reached for the envelope she’d set there, “I’m sure she’d love to see it.”

“Uh oh, what did you do now Hope?” Karen questioned with a light smile as Hope reached for the
envelope in her mother’s hands and she brought it towards her mouth in a tiny attempt to taste it.

“You can’t eat that,” Eve laughed lightly as she urged the paper from Hope’s mouth, “Now give it to
           Karen.”

“Can I have that?” Karen reached out to her as Hope eyed the envelope intently before extending it
out towards Karen. Karen accepted it from her hand, “thank you sweetie,” Karen smiled before
opening the envelope and pulling out the page. “What is this?”

“Just read it,” Eve urged with a smile as Karen began to read it aloud.

“Dear Karen,” Karen began to read as Chris and Eve exchanged glances, “my mommy told me that
you were going to have a baby for me to play with and I’m so happy, I get a best friend like you are
my mommy's best friend, and your baby can be my best friend. Love Hope,” Karen’s eyes misted
over as she looked back to Eve, “you even put her little footprint on here.”

“That was Chris’ special touch,” Eve admitted, “he and Hope were playing with the finger paints
yesterday when he came up with the idea.”

“Oh Eve, it’s beautiful,” Karen answered reaching out to hug her friend, “Thank you Hope. Thank
you Eve,” she sniffled as Hope reached out to hug Karen.

“I knew it was going to turn into waterworks central here,” Chris let out a soft groan.

“That’s what you get with raging hormones,” Jack noted as Chris noted the tears building behind
           Eve’s eyes.

“Okay that’s it,” Chris stepped forward as Hope began to let out a cry as she followed suit with Eve
and Karen, “I don’t need our daughter joining in.”

“Thank you Hope,” Karen wiped at her eyes before she gave Hope a tiny kiss, “that was so sweet
           of you.”

“She takes after her father,” Chris teased lifting Hope from Eve’s arms as he looked to his wife, “so
I take it you and Karen have a lot to do?”

“Are you trying to get rid of us?”

“I’m just making sure you get there in time,” Chris answered honestly as he looked to Karen, “don’t
forget to bring her to Windham’s safely.”

“You have my word,” Karen nodded as Eve gave Hope one last kiss goodbye.

“Take care,” she touched her daughter’s face before she looked to Chris, “you too.”

“We’ll miss you,” Chris answered giving her puppy dog eyes.

“I’ll be thinking about you too,” Eve offered leaning in to kiss him tenderly as she reached out to
           touch him, “I love you.”

“I love you too Eve,” he answered as she gave him one last kiss before waving good-bye and
           leaving the apartment with Karen.

“I never thought I’d live to see the day this would be happening,” Jack confessed breaking his
silence as he looked to his brother.

“What’s that?” Chris questioned giving Hope a kiss.

“You like this,” Jack admitted, “it’s just so...”

           “So what?”

“Unlike what we had,” Jack answered, “it’s not the kind of life we had.”

“I don’t want my daughter to ever have to experience any of that,” Chris answered honestly.

“You’re a good father Chris. Hope’s a lucky little girl,” Jack insisted with a smile.

“I’m the lucky one to have been blessed with her and Eve,” Chris admitted, “they’ve made my life
turn around in so many ways.”

“Eve’s a good woman,” Jack nodded.

“The best,” Chris added, “and hey someday it’ll happen for you as well.”

“I wouldn’t go that far,” Jack laughed lightly, “I think I’m through with romance for a while.”

“Another fight with Livvie?” Chris questioned curiously.

“Well something along those lines. I mean she really wants to work things out...”

           “...but you don’t.”

“Chris, I wouldn’t even know where to begin,” Jack confessed, “a lot has happened, things that
well, I don’t know if they can be undone.”

           “That bad huh?”

“Something like that,” Jack nodded, “I think we grew apart.”

“Or maybe you never weren’t meant to be in the first place.”

“Kevin would like to think so,” Jack confessed.

“Screw Kevin. Like his opinion is ever worth anything,” Chris rolled his eyes, “he’s full of hot air.”

“Yeah but he’s her father and I think he knows....” Jack stopped himself.

           “Knows what?”

“Never mind,” Jack shook his head, “it’s just. I think that Livvie and I are pretty much over.”

           “Have you told her yet?”

           “I’ve been trying to.”

“Oh that’ll go down wonderfully with Livvie,” Chris half teased, “she comes from a family of nut
           jobs.”

           “And we don’t?”

“That’s not the same,” Chris hesitated, “this is really bothering you isn’t it?”

“Yes and no,” Jack shrugged, “I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Fair enough. I won’t say I told you so about Livvie,” Chris paused, “although, I’ll say it. I told you
           so.”

“Thanks Chris and here I thought you weren’t going to rub it in,” Jack gave him a glare.

“I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist,” Chris answered making his way across the room, “but rest assured she
wasn’t worthy of a Ramsey anyways.”

“I really loved her Chris,” Jack offered up taking a seat on the sofa, “she was really special.”

“But she wasn’t the one Jack. Any woman who would’ve been that indecisive about the man in her
           life isn’t worth the energies.”

“And what about your time with Eve?”

“That’s different,” Chris answered honestly, “when it’s meant to be my dear brother, it’ll happen
and when it does, beware because there’s no turning away from it. Not that I’d want to because I
wouldn’t give up what Eve and I have for the world.”

“Obviously,” Jack replied as Chris returned into the living room handing him a drink, “it seems like
it’s all coming true for you.”

“It is,” Chris answered with a proud smile as he held his daughter, “and I couldn’t be happier.”

“Somehow I expected I’d be seeing you down here today,” Mac Scorpio began as he looked up
           from his desk.

“I thought that we should talk,” Kevin admitted stepping inside Mac’s office and nodding to a seat,
           “may I?”

“Of course,” Mac answered, “so I take it you heard the news.”

“I did,” Kevin replied with a frown, “so that’s it huh? An open and shut case?”

“They found the letter Kevin,” Mac explained.

“I realize that, but in the previous cases, they also found a suicide note of Jake Marshak’s
           remember?”

“Kevin, that was completely different,” Mac hesitated, “wasn’t it?”

“Who found the note Mac?” Kevin questioned.

“One of my officers that went in after we left.”

“There wasn’t a note when Lucy and I were there,” Kevin admitted, “we were in that closet and the
only thing we found was what I submitted to Garcia.”

“I realize that Kevin, but you must not have seen...”

“I know what I saw Mac,” Kevin insisted firmly, “this isn’t so cut and dry.”

           “Why do you say that?”

“Because I don’t see why Tamara Moore would kill Ian Thornhart and then take her own life.
Secondly, I don’t understand how she could’ve made it out of her room to begin with. I had her
           under strict lockdown.”

“That was explained when we found the orderly in the padded room you had her in. She must’ve
overpowered him and made her way out.”

“Without being detected?” Kevin gave him a ponderous look, “then tell me something Mac. How is
it she happened to have wandered out of the psych ward fully sedated, manage to pick up a gun in
the process, make her way down to Chris Ramsey’s office in enough time to write up a phony
General Homicide murder, a suicide not, then manage to shoot Ian, slip out of Chris’s office for a
while, only to return later and kill herself in a linen closet?”

           “Kevin, I don’t....”

“It’s not possible Mac. You know it and I know it despite whatever story the press is giving here.”

“Look,” Mac began tightly, “I think you’re on to something, but I’ve been getting pressure.”

           “Pressure how?” Kevin questioned puzzled.

“From higher up,” Mac explained, “when I got the suicide note, I was a skeptic too, however I was
told to leave well enough alone and close the case.”

“Close the case? Mac, two people are dead,” Kevin reminded him, “how can you just close the
           case?”

“Look,” Mac lowered his voice as he leaned in closer to Kevin, “they brought the feds in on this
one. I don’t know what’s going on, but I’ve spent the last twenty four hours going over Ian
Thornhart and Tamara Moore’s records and they aren’t pretty.”

“What?” Kevin blinked back, “their records?”

“Turns out Ian Thornhart had a great many more enemies than any of us were aware of,” Mac
frowned slightly, “given what the FBI told me last night none of us had a clue what the man was
about. His record ranges from extortion to kidnapping to murder,” Mac admitted, “all of this is
classified information I’m giving you Kevin.”

“Ian Thornhart,” Kevin repeated, “Mac, that can’t be right.”

“Well it gets even more twisted,” Mac looked out into the office before he focused his attention on
Kevin once more, “it turns out that Tamara Moore was working for him.”

“Working for him? For Ian?” Kevin repeated, “Mac they’re doctors, I don’t think that they were
           hardened criminals.”

“She did run Karen Wexler over in the parking garage,” Mac pointed out.

“Yes, and she shot Chris Ramsey, but that proves she’s unstable at best,” Kevin replied, “that
topped off with all that’s been going on in her therapy never suggests anything other than a deeply
           disturbed woman.”

“In her letter and the files...” Mac started.

“I want to see the letter Mac,” Kevin insisted.

“It was turned over to the FBI.”

“And you didn’t have a problem with that?” Kevin frowned, “Mac, think about it. If what they’re
saying is true, then why would Tamara Moore pick my novel to depict her murder/suicide on? That
           makes no sense.”

“Maybe it was to throw us off,” Mac suggested.

“Then why leave the suicide note,” Kevin raised his brow, “that in itself would defeat the purpose
should she be trying to cover up her true motive.”

           “Perhaps,” Mac agreed.

“Mac, something more is going on here.”

“What are you suggesting Kevin? That the feds are keeping something from us?”

“It wouldn’t be the first time,” Kevin admitted, “and Mac, why is it that the suicide note popped up
after there was already a thorough scan of the linen closet? I didn’t see a note.”

“Kevin,” Mac sighed, “look maybe you’re right.”

“My instincts tell me that whatever is going on, it’s not over yet.”

“Maybe you feel that way because of the way the murders went down before,” Mac suggested.

“Or maybe it’s my gut instinct,” Kevin blurted out, “while I never was a believer in those things,
Lucy’s made me see that you can’t ignore what you believe to be true.”

“You’re using Lucy logic now? Kevin, I don’t know if that’s such a good idea,” Mac replied with a
           frown.

“It’s never failed her,” Kevin answered as the phone on Mac’s desk rang.

“I have to get this,” Mac explained.

“Of course, but let me know when you hear something more,” Kevin replied moving towards the
           door.

“Kevin,” Mac started as Kevin turned to face him.

           “Yes?”

“I’ll look into it,” Mac promised as Kevin nodded leaving him to his work as Mac wondered if
           indeed Kevin was onto something.

“Eve, I can’t believe you picked out this color,” Karen offered up with a groan, “I’ll look like a
           beached whale.”

“You will not. Let me see,” Eve urged standing outside of the fitting room, “come on Karen.”

“When you went and picked this out, I never imagined that the twins would be growing so quickly,”
Karen admitted stepping out of the room as her flowing lavender gown hung over her moderately
rounded abdomen, “See what I mean?”

“Karen, you look beautiful,” Eve offered up, “stunning even.”

“You’re biased because you’re my friend.”

“I am not. Besides Frank would agree with me,” Eve answered with a smile.

“He loves me, so it’s the same response,” Karen sighed, “but seriously Eve, I’m glad you asked me
           to do this.”

“There’s no one else I’d rather have at my side than you Karen,” Eve admitted with a smile, “we’ve
           been through a lot together.”

“We have,” Karen nodded, “but it seems like things are finally working out for us all.”

           “How’s Scott dealing with everything?”

“With my contemplating eloping with Frank or with the idea of being a grandfather?”

“Both,” Eve answered watching her friend’s eyes.

“Well, he’s a bit disappointed that Frank and I didn’t want to do things the traditional way like you
and Chris are doing the second time around, but in the same respect he sees we’re happy. Serena
was a little upset that she wouldn’t be able to be a flower girl in every sense of the word, but since
you so generously offered, it makes up for her sister not giving her the honor,” Karen half laughed.

“Oh come on. You know with the way Scott is, you and Frank will be walking down the isle in Port
Charles as he’s not going to just accept the Vegas wedding you and Frank had in mind,” Eve
           reminded her.

“Probably not,” Karen sighed, “but I’d at least like to wait until I can wear a different sized gown
before Frank and I do the traditional thing.”

“You’re lucky that Mary didn’t string you up for even thinking of eloping,” Eve reminded her.

“Hey, I thought you were here to be my friend and confidant, not to make me feel even worse.”

“I’m just making conversation,” Eve decided as she took a look at her own reflection.

“Always putting your foot in your mouth?” a voice rose from behind her, “and here I thought maybe
just maybe you might’ve out grown that. What was I thinking?”

Eve’s eyes widened as she instantly recognized the voice. She spun around to find her sister
           standing behind her, “Shelly?”

“In the flesh,” She smiled in response, “you didn’t actually think that I’d miss out on your big day,
           did you?”

“When you said that you were tied up with projects...” Eve stammered in surprise.

“Eve, you’re my sister, do you really think a stupid assignment means more than my sister?” Shelly
gave her a pointed look, “Hardly and besides since I didn’t get to meet that loser ex-husband of
yours, I thought I might take the time to actually get to know your new husband, not to mention see
           my little niece.”

“Oh she’d beautiful Shelly,” Eve moved over to embrace her sister, “I just know you two are going
to hit it off,” Eve pulled back, “Oh I’m sorry,” she looked over her shoulder, “Karen, this is Shelly,
my sister and Shelly, this is my best friend Karen Wexler.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” Karen extended her hand, “I’ve heard so much about you.”

“All good I hope,” Shelly gave Eve a look.

“Of course it was,” Eve frowned slightly, “what else would there be?”

“Coming from you, I wasn’t sure,” Shelly admitted with a laugh.

“Hush now or I’ll start telling everyone the truth about you,” Eve warned her.

“Heaven forbid,” Shelly laughed lightly, “I’m so glad to see you.”

“It’s so good to have you back sis,” Eve admitted hugging her, “I can’t wait for you to meet Chris
and Hope. I know you’re going to just love them.”

“I’m sure I will,” Shelly answered realizing that she’d missed her sister and after all this time, it was
good to be back in Port Charles again.

“We’re late Chris,” Jack insisted watching his brother rush around the apartment in a frenzy.

“I realize that, but I’m trying to figure out where I stashed those extra bottles,” Chris answered
dismayed as he searched through the kitchen with Hope tucked in his arm, “I could’ve swore I had
them on the counter here, but now that I look...”

“Chris, Eve is going to string you up if you miss this appointment,” Jack reminded him.

“We’ll make it. We’ll make it,” Chris answered as Hope let out a tiny laugh, “hey you are you going
to give me any clue where I might’ve set your bottles?”

Hope laughed again before clapping her hands lightly.

“Not even a hint?” Chris watched as her eyes widened and she began to babble in her own little
language before her eyes darted towards the refrigerator, “daddy already looked there,” Chris
answered before frowning. Suddenly he looked up and noticed the bottles that were sitting on top of
the fridge, “found them,” He called out to Jack as he tucked them in the diaper bag, “you knew all
           along didn’t you?”

Hope let out another tiny laugh as Chris leaned forward to kiss her.

“You stinker,” he teased as he collected the rest of her things and made his way towards the living
           room, “We’re ready now.”

“Finally,” Jack groaned as he moved to open the door, “let’s go.”

“After you,” Chris insisted as Jack opened the door and they were met by a familiar pair of dark set
eyes and Chris let out a gasp, “Henry.”
