Chapter One

(This story is a sequel to the Chris and Eve Fanfic Beyond Desire)

“Watch your step,” Eve urged as she opened the front door further for Chris to enter the apartment,
“in fact give me a second.”

“What did you do while I was gone?” Chris questioned as he noted the packages ahead of him, “on
second thought I don’t want to know.”

“Oh come on Chris. It’s not that bad,” Eve offered with a smile as she set Hope’s car seat down on
the sofa leaving a sleeping Hope inside. She moved forward to push one of the boxes out of Chris’
path, “Victor just came over with a few things he had for Hope.”

“Victor?” Chris raised a curious brow, “what does Victor Collins have to do with our daughter?”

“Well, he wasn’t the only one,” Eve admitted, “Frank stopped by with something that Karen had
picked up for Hope, then Gabby, Alison, Jack, Livvie, Mary....”

“I get the point,” Chris half laughed as he watched her reach out to move one of the boxes, “hey,”
he reached out tugging on her arm as he drew her in closer to him, “why don’t you take it easy
dear? We can clean this up later.”

“I was just trying to keep you from tripping,” Eve admitted as he wrapped her up in an embrace.

“I think I’ll manage Eve,” Chris smiled at her, “I’m doing just fine.”

“Joe said to be careful,” she pointed out.

“Joe’s a moron Eve,” Chris sighed squeezing her to him, “as you can clearly see I’m better than I’ve
ever been with my wife and daughter whom I love very much.”

“Wife and daughter,” Eve repeated with a smile as she leaned in to kiss him, “I like the sound of
           that.”

“Funny thing so do I,” Chris admitted as Hope’s tiny cry rose above the moment.

“Looks like someone is awake,” Eve offered with a light smile as she took a step back, “it’s dinner
           time.”

“I’ll take care of it Eve,” Chris suggested reaching out for Hope’s diaper bag that contained her
           bottles.

“Are you sure?” Eve gave him a look, “I mean you really should be resting.”

“Eve, I’m her father and believe me,” Chris smiled proudly, “this is the best kind of recovery.”

“In that case,” Eve offered with a smile as she stepped out of his way, “I’ll just go change and let
           you two have a moment.”

“We’ll be here,” Chris replied as he moved in beside his daughter reaching out to take her into his
arms, “come here little princess,” he insisted as he held her close to him, “I’ve missed you. Yes I
           have..”

Eve stood in the hallway for a moment watching the two of them together for a long moment as she
thought of how her life had gone. Things had become so perfect for her as she’d finally had what she
wanted in her life. She had a family and a husband who loved her. Life was only going to be better
from here on out and suddenly the world to her seemed to be such a perfect place. Come what may
in this lifetime, she’d always have Hope and Chris and that thought alone made her smile as she
realized she’d finally had it all.

“Now I’m going to ask you one more time,” the smooth, solid voice questioned as he emerged from
the shadows loosening his tie, “where is it?”

“I..I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Henry Ramsey stammered spitting out some blood that
had pooled in his mouth after Bruiser’s last punch. He tried to shift in the metal chair he’d been tied
down to, but the restraints were too tight. It was useless to try to escape as Bruiser and the crew
had done a more than adequate job of keeping him captive. He let out a pained cough as his lungs
           gasped for air.

“Now, I know you’re lying,” Keaton Diablo insisted as moved forward with an air of cool
confidence. With a twisted smile upon his face he knelt down before Henry’s battered and bruised
form as he shook his head, “tsk, tsk, don’t you know that lying is a no no along with stealing from
           me?“

“I didn’t steal from you,” Henry pleaded as another cough erupted from within him.

“Now Henry, we both know that isn’t entirely true and we also know that only a fool would take
what’s mine,” Keaton shook his head, “and we both also know that you are no fool. I want my
           Dragon’s Eye. Where is it?”

“I...I don’t know,” Henry’s voice shook with fear as Keaton gave him a disapproving look.

“You have no idea how this displeases me Henry,” Keaton rose from the floor, “and here I had such
plans for us.” Keaton motioned to one of his thugs, “I take it you can finish this.”

“Of course sir,” the thug nodded as Keaton gave Henry one last look.

“It’s a shame it had to be this way,” Keaton sighed, “I had such high hopes for our partnership.”

Keaton turned towards the door as Bruiser stepped forward ready to rid them of Henry Ramsey. In
a panic Henry spoke up shakily, “Wait. Keaton...I think....I think I might remember...”

Keaton stopped in the doorway before turning around to face Henry with a sadistic smile. “You
wouldn’t be lying to me to spare yourself, would you?”

“No, no not at all and if you let me go, I promise you I’ll find it. I’ll get it back good as new,” Henry
offered desperately, “I swear to it.”

“Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t kill you.”

“Because if you do, you’ll never know what happened to the Dragon’s Eye. Only I know where to
find it,” Henry bargained as Bruiser stepped in closer, “please Keaton.”

“I never imagined you’d be begging,” Keaton paused, “but since I’m such a forgiving guy,” he
nodded to Bruiser to release the restraints as Henry toppled to the floor, “you’ve got three weeks.”

“Thank you,” Henry breathed a sigh of relief as his limbs weakened beneath him and another cough
           erupted from within, “thank you.”

“But I warn you,” Keaton glared at him, “if you fail me, it’ll be your final mistake.”

“I won’t,” Henry promised as Keaton and his thugs cleared the room leaving him to pull himself
together. Somehow he had to find it. The Dragon’s Eye had to be returned or he was a dead man.
He just hoped that it was where he’d left it a while ago.

“Jack, wasn’t it so great to see Chris and Eve today,” Livvie sighed as she leaned into Jack, “I mean
it’s so romantic to think that love could win against the odds.”

“Chris is a lucky guy,” Jack agreed with a smile as he gazed up at the sky, “he has had a rough time
and while I’ve spent most of this year wishing that Chris would just drop off the planet, well, I’m
           glad he didn’t.”

“I know Jack,” Livvie snuggled in closer, “you’re a good man and Chris is lucky to have such a
           forgiving brother like you.”

“I’m not that great Livvie,” Jack offered up after a moment.

“Oh on the contrary Jack Ramsey,” Livvie leaned in to kiss him, “you are the greatest man I know.”

“No Livvie, I’m not,” he shook his head as he broke from the kiss, “far from it.”

“Jack, how can you say that? I mean think of all the times you saved me in the past,” she curled in
closer to him, “you’ve saved me from myself so many times.”

“Livvie, it was nothing,” Jack shrugged as he shifted beside her.

“How can you say that? After all we’ve been through together,” Livvie sighed, “I mean we are so
lucky. Just look at Chris. He tried to break us apart and then he found Tamara and she was truly a
nutcase. I mean what could possibly drive that woman to have done all those horrible things?”

“I don’t know,” Jack sighed as he remembered his night with Tamara, “some people just act before
           they think.”

“Not you though,” she looked to him, “you always know the right thing to do or say.”

“Livvie,” he started as she moved in to kiss him. He opened his mouth to speak again when he felt a
vibration in his jacket pocket. He reached out to her shoulders and stopped her midkiss, “hold that
thought,” he announced reaching inside his jacket and withdrawing a cell phone.

“You carry a cell phone now?” she questioned puzzled.

“I thought it was a good idea,” he shrugged as he answered the call, “hello. Yes, yes,” he gave
Livvie a look before covering up the mouthpiece. He moved from the blanket they were laying
upon, “I’ll be right back,” he informed her as he walked away leaving her to wonder what was going
           on.

A few minutes later Jack returned with a frown upon his face, “Livvie I have to cut this short.”

           “What’s going on Jack?”

“I can’t explain right now, but I have to go.”

           “Just like that?”

“Livvie, I’m sorry, but this can’t wait.”

           “Is it Chris?”

           “Livvie...”

“If it is, let me go with you. I can help you Jack.”

“Livvie, I need to do this on my own,” he informed her as she rose to her feet, “but I’ll call you
           later.”

“Jack, I wish you wouldn’t shut me out,” she reached out to him.

“Livvie, trust me this is something I need to do on my own.”

“Alright,” she sighed, “but I wish you’d include me.”

“Livvie, I’ll call you later,” he insisted pulling her into an embrace as he thought about what was
           ahead for him.

Eve stepped into the hallway as she noted Chris laid out on the sofa with Hope asleep on his chest.
A smile curled over her lips as she moved in beside him, “hey daddy.”

“Hey,” he smiled in response as she stepped into the room, “our little princess was tired.”

“I can see that,” Eve nodded in response, “but she looks more than content right now.”

“That makes two of us,” Chris offered up his arm to Eve, “care to join us?”

“You two look perfectly fine the way you are.”

“There’s always room for one more,” Chris teased drawing her in beside him as Eve snuggled in
against him. “besides as I always told you, there’s always room for three in my bed especially when
they are the two most beautiful women in the world.”

“Kiss up,” Eve gave him a look as she snuggled in beside him.

“Is there a problem with that?”

“No, not at all,” Eve smiled lightly, “I actually enjoy this side of you.”

“Really? As opposed to my other sides?”

           “Well, this is just softer...”

“Now wait a second. Are you calling me a big ole softy now?” he raised a brow.

           “What if I am?”

“Well, I’d have to say that you’re...” he stopped himself as Hope let out a tiny yawn in her slumber,
“well you’re probably right, but if you let it get around...”

“And ruin your tyrant reputation,” she chuckled lightly, “I wouldn’t dream of it. After all the last thing
I want everyone knowing is that my husband is a nice guy. It might make him appear to be more of
a desirable quantity to all the women at PC and if they even tried to come near you, I‘d have to
           scratch their eyes out.”

“There’s the Eve I’ve grown to love,” Chris teased in response, “I could get used to this protective
           side.”

“I’ll bet you could,” Eve frowned slightly, “I still would like to give Tamara a piece of my mind for all
           she did to you.”

“It wouldn’t do any good,” Chris sighed, “Kevin said she’s beyond any rational conversation at this
           point in time.”

“Chris, what are you going to do about her?” Eve asked lightly, “I mean if she’s really pregnant...”

“Eve, I’m not going to turn my back on any child that she might be having,” Chris frowned slightly as
he touched her cheek, “but you and Hope are my future now.”

           “I know that,” she nodded.

“Eve, look at me,” he urged, “regardless of what happens with Tamara, you two are where I want
to be. I’m not going to lie to you and say that I won’t be a father to Tamara’s child because you
           know me better than that.”

“Chris, I would never ask you to walk away from a piece of yourself,” she looked to Hope, “I
know you far too well to expect something like that.”

“But that doesn’t mean that we can’t make it happen. Given the condition Tamara’s in,” Chris
hesitated, “Eve, can you handle having another child around here knowing that Tamara and I...”

“Chris, you tolerated what happened with Ian and I for so long,” Eve answered meeting his gaze,
“you put up with so much from me that I shouldn’t dare feel anything negative about the situation...”

“Eve, you’re only human. I’m sure you must feel something...”

“I wish Tamara wasn’t the one, but any part of you,” Eve met his eyes, “I love all of you Chris and
I’ll love any child that you’ve fathered.”

“I’m so glad to hear you say that,” Chris let out a breath of relief, “I wouldn’t want to lose you or
           Hope.”

“You won’t lose us,” Eve promised, “in fact I think Hope would rather enjoy having a little brother
or sister running around the house.”

“I was hoping to give her a few of them,” Chris admitted with a smile.

“A few of them?” Eve raised a curious brow.

“Well we both did say we wanted a strong, solid family,” Chris pointed out.

“And you wanted that to be a large one as well?” Eve asked.

“There’s nothing more rewarding than to see you with our child Eve,” Chris admitted.

“So you want me to be your pregnant wife all the time?”

“There’s nothing more beautiful than seeing you carrying my child Eve,” Chris answered honestly,
“it’s the most amazing thing in the world.”

“It really is, isn’t it,” Eve replied with a smile, “you know I never thought I’d be so welcome in the
role of being a mother. After everything that happened in my life, I shunned the thought, but you
changed that for me. You made me see that it can be a beautiful thing.”

“It is Eve,” Chris offered up with a smile, “you’re beautiful.”

           “And you’re biased.”

“I know,” Chris laughed lightly, “but it’s only because I love you so much.”

“I love you too,” Eve admitted as she snuggled into him, “so you really want me pregnant again?”

“Maybe not right away,” Chris teased, “but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun practicing at it
before we decide to expand our family.”

“I knew there was a catch,” Eve swatted at him lightly as Hope shifted over him, “you just want to
           get me into bed.”

“Guilty as charged, but hey what can I say?” he defended, “I happen to think my wife is the sexiest
           woman alive.”

“Well in that case,” Eve laughed lightly as Hope cooed before letting out a sigh, “oh would you look
           her. She’s so beautiful.”

“Yes she is,” Chris agreed, “just like her mother.”

“Chris, thank you for all of this, for making my dreams come true.”

“This is only the beginning Eve,” Chris promised her, “we have a whole life of happiness ahead of
           us.”

“I know we do,” Eve sighed resting her head on his chest, “of course you do realize that in being so
happy it entitles us to bragging rights everywhere.”

“But of course,” Chris smiled proudly, “only the best of the best where my family is concerned.”

“I think we should start flaunting it off as soon as possible.”

           “Most definately,” Chris agreed.

“I’m glad you feel that way because I think we’re going to start tomorrow night. What do you say?”

“What do you have in mind?”

“Actually,” Eve smiled at him, “I was thinking something along the lines of a dinner party.”

“A dinner party,” Chris repeated, “well that’s a nice idea, but tomorrow is rather sudden.”

“Not really, I mean Frank and Karen were planning on making their way over sometime and...”

           “Hold it. Frank and Karen?”

“Well of course. I mean they’re so excited about Karen’s pregnancy and since Karen’s my best
           friend besides you...”

“Hold on a second. You plan on having Frank Scanlon in my home?” Chris gave her a pointed look,
“you have got to be kidding.”

“Come on Chris. It won’t be so bad.”

“Um, hello. Are we talking about the same man? The Frank Scanlon who locked you in the morgue
freezer and also served you up human Chinese Du Jour?”

“He’s a changed man,” Eve insisted.

“Changed...does that mean he’ll wait until after dessert to try to strangle me?” Chris threw her
another look, “I don’t think it’s a good idea given history.”

“Chris, just trust me on this. It’s all in the past,” Eve kissed him tenderly, “besides if Frank tries
anything, you have my full permission to kick him out of here.”

“I’m sure Karen will love that one,” Chris paused for a moment, “you know it’s still not too late to
try to talk some sense into Karen before she marries that idiot.”

“She loves him Chris,” Eve reminded him, “and besides if we can make it against the odds, maybe it
can work for Karen and Frank.”

“Only if she sleeps with a tranquilizer gun,” he answered offhandedly.

“Do you want me to call it off?” Eve gave him a look, “because I can if you really want me to....”

“No, no it’s okay,” Chris decided, “in fact I welcome the idea of showing Frank that I have
everything I’ve ever wanted right here in my arms.”

           “There’s the spirit,” Eve smiled.

“I must really love you,” Chris answered.

           “You’d better.”

“I’ll love you forever,” Chris admitted openly, “but I will tell you that I might not always be the
           easiest to live with.”

“As if I didn’t know that already,” Eve gave him a look, “but I think we can work it out.”

“I know we can,” Chris replied as a laugh bubbled him over, “would you listen to us? We’ve turned
into the kind of sappy couples that we always made fun of in the past?”

“Nah we still have our edge,” Eve argued, “we just haven’t had an opportunity to let it out yet, but
then again I could deal with a little sap.”

“A little,” Chris gave her a look, “I think we went well beyond that point a couple of hours ago.”

“Well, none the less, I like things the way they are,” Eve argued with a hint of laughter, “I like having
           you as my loving husband.”

“It’s a role I welcome,” Chris admitted with a smile.

“Good in that case husband of mine, why don’t we take Hope to bed and we can,” she paused,
“discuss those plans for the future?”

“Discuss,” he gave her a look, “really?”

“Well, I know Joe said you had to take it easy for a while, but I’m sure we could have a discussion
that’s not too limited but not to extraneous either.”

“Hmm...” Chris let a smile cross over his features as Hope let out a loud cry, “uh oh. I think we have
           an objection.”

“Oh Hope,” Eve looked to their daughter as her cries filled the room surrounding them, “what’s the
matter?” she reached out to her, “you can’t be hungry again.”

“I don’t think that’s it,” Chris wrinkled his nose as he felt the warmth of his soaked shirt, “I think she
           had an accident.”

“Oh baby,” Eve couldn’t help but laugh as she picked Hope up off of him. She noted that Hope was
soaked as she looked to Chris, “oh you poor little angel. Come on. We’ll get you changed up.”

“I think I’m going to hop in the shower,” Chris decided as Eve stepped away from the sofa.

“It might be a good idea,” Eve agreed with a nod, “maybe Hope and I will join you. What do you
           say?”

“Ah, so she was working with daddy,” Chris smiled playfully as there was a knock at the door.

“I think we might have to have a rain check,” Eve frowned slightly.

“I’ll get rid of them,” Chris decided as he looked down to his shirt, “ugh,” he wrinkled his nose as he
began to unbutton the shirt. He opened the door while unbuttoning his shirt as he noted Jack
           standing before him.

“Having problems?” Jack gave him a curious look.

“Jack,” Chris looked to him, “hey what are you doing here?”

“I have to talk to you Chris. It’s really important,” Jack answered, “is it a bad time?”

“Well actually,” Chris started as he nodded towards his shirt.

“Look Chris I wouldn’t be here if this wasn’t an emergency,” Jack confessed, “we need to talk like
           now.”

           “It looks serious.”

           “It is Chris.”

“In that case come on in,” Chris suggested letting him inside, “what seems to be the problem?”

“You see I was out with Livvie earlier and I got a phone call,” Jack began as Eve slipped into the
           living room wearing a robe.

“I hope you got rid of them,” she said as she saw Jack standing before her, “oh Jack...hi.”

“Eve,” Jack started after a moment‘s hesitation, “hi...um...this is a bad time isn’t it?”

“No of course it’s not Jack,” she shook her head, “is something wrong?”

“It can wait,” Jack sighed looking to Chris.

           “Are you sure?” Chris frowned.

“Yeah,” Jack nodded looking to Hope in Eve‘s arms, “it can wait.”

           “You sure?”

“Positive, I guess it wasn’t as big as I made it sound,” Jack waved, “you two have a great night.”

“Okay,” Chris began as Jack stepped out of the apartment.

“Talk to you later Chris,” Jack said as he slipped out of sight.

“What was that all about?” Eve asked with a frown.

“I don’t know, but something tells me Jack’s in some kind of trouble,” Chris frowned once more,
“maybe I should go after him.”

“That might be a good idea,” she nodded as Chris left the apartment.

A few minutes later Chris returned, “He’s gone.”

           “Already?”

“Strange,” Chris sighed, “well whatever it is, I think I’m going to need to talk to him.”

“That’s a good idea, but maybe you should shower first.”

“I just might,” he nodded, “after all it seems Hope had other plans for me tonight. Jack will just have
to wait,” Chris decided turning his attention back to his wife and daughter as he wondered what was
going on with his younger brother.

“Sorry Chris,” Jack let out a breath as he stood outside the building Chris lived in, “I wanted to tell
you what’s going on, but right now it’s too dangerous and I won’t put you, Eve or Hope at risk. I’ll
just have to deal with this on my own,” Jack decided as he walked off into the night wondering how
he was ever going to explain this one.

                                     Chapter Two

“How are we doing in there?” Eve questioned popping her head into the kitchen as she saw Chris
           standing before the stove.

“Answer me this,” Chris began turning to face her as he raised a brow, “how is it you decide to put
on a dinner party, yet I am the cook for the evening?”

“Because my dear,” Eve approached him placing her arms around his waist with a smile, “we do so
want our company to return and if I was cooking....”

“Hmm....I never thought of it that way,” Chris teased, “of course I’ll have to make sure Frank’s isn’t
too good, so that he doesn’t return.”

           “Chris, come on.”

“Eve, it’s Frank Scanlon,” Chris gave her a look, “I realize that being with Ian might’ve fried your
brain a bit, but Frank is not a good guy.”

“Maybe not, but he’s the father of Karen’s baby,” Eve reminded him, “and Karen is my friend.”

“Which is why we should be trying to talk her out of this relationship,” Chris insisted, “it’s just what
           friends would do.”

“Chris, if I listened to everyone who tried to talk me out of my relationships, I’d be miserable.”

“Or we would’ve been together sooner,” he decided.

“Or not at all,” Eve gave him a look, “you’re not exactly a topic of positive gossip in Port Charles.”

“Like you were,” Chris frowned slightly.

“No, I wasn’t always, but I’m just saying,” she pressed her palm over his chest, “I didn’t listen to
the gossips. I knew your heart and that’s what made me fall hopelessly in love with you.”

“You wouldn’t be kissing up would you?” Chris shot her a look as he pulled back slightly.

“Maybe a little, but it’s all true,” Eve insisted with a smile as she inched up on her tiptoes.

“Of course it is,” Chris decided proudly, “but it took you long enough to see it.”

“I was blind, but I won’t make that mistake again,” she urged giving him a quick kiss as the doorbell
           rang, “Company’s here.”

“Great,” Chris groaned as she rushed over to the door.

“Karen, hi,” Eve’s voice vibrated through the kitchen, “Frank, hi. Come on in.”

“Wonderful,” Chris rolled his eyes as he wiped his hands with a dishtowel and stepped out into the
living room. Putting on his best fake smile he greeted them, “Karen, Frank.”

           “Ramsey,” Frank nodded at him.

“It’s so good to have you both here,” Chris started giving Frank a glare.

“Thanks for having us over,” Karen smiled at him.

“Karen, it’s always a pleasure to have you over especially when we have a gourmet dinner tonight,”
           he glanced over at Frank.

“Chris has been working on something very special this afternoon,” Eve explained brightly.

           “What’s that?” Karen asked.

“Well since Eve and I know first hand just how much Frank likes Chinese,” Chris flashed him a dry
grin, “I figured I’d whip up something along those lines.”

“How thoughtful,” Frank shot back sarcastically.

“You know, I think drinks would be great right about now,” Eve broke the tension in the air as
           Frank glared at Chris.

“Drinks would be nice,” Karen nodded placing her hand over her abdomen, “how about juice or
           something?”

“I have some really great strawberry kiwi....” Eve began as the sounds of Hope’s cries rushed over
the baby monitor, “oh it sounds like Hope is up.”

“Well she couldn’t miss all the fun,” Karen smiled at her.

“I’ll be right back,” Eve explained giving Chris a look.

“I’ll go with you,” Karen responded turning to look at Frank, “behave.”

           “When don’t I?” Frank shrugged.

“I mean it,” Karen warned as she followed Eve down the hallway.

“Yeah behave Scanlon,” Chris rolled his eyes mocking Karen’s words as he glanced at Frank, “as if
you know the meaning of the word.”

“Pipe down Ramsey,” Frank warned glaring at him.

“Or what? You’re going to knock me unconscious on the floor here,” Chris scratched his head,
“hmm.....been there, done that already Frank.”

“Look Ramsey, obviously there’s no love lost between us because let’s face it, I don’t like you and
you don’t like me,” Frank began with a sneer.

“Gee, I wonder why,” Chris rolled his eyes, “and here I thought we were the best of friends. Tell me
something now that Karen‘s pregnant, are you going to turn your back on her like you did with Julie
           too?”

“I love Karen,” Frank defended, “she means the world to me.”

“Julie said you told her that once too,” Chris cut back, “or was that just bull?”

“Funny thing Chris, she screwed us both over,” Frank reminded him, “Julie wasn’t always as she
           seemed to be.”

“Even so she deserved better than what she got from you,” Chris turned back towards the kitchen.

“Maybe she did, but obviously you didn’t do enough for her since she fled town without so much as
           contemplating taking you with her.”

“Look Frank,” Chris turned to face him as his eyes narrowed, “I cared about Julie, wanted to help
           her.”

“If that was true, you would’ve told me the truth about Christina from the start.”

“So you could walk out on her? Abandon them both? I did Julie and Christina a favor in keeping
           you away.”

“I should’ve let you die at Tamara‘s apartment,” Frank remarked offhandedly.

“You know I never understood that, why did you help me?”

“Because I know Eve loves you.”

“Since when do you give a damn about what Eve loves? Since you locked her in the morgue to get
           your kicks?”

“She’s Karen’s best friend, and even though I think she can do better, for some strange reason she
loves you and that was reason enough,” Frank replied with a frown.

“So you did it for Karen?”

“Yes, as a matter of fact I did,” Frank nodded.

“Just like you got in the way of her and Joe,” Chris questioned as Eve and Karen stepped into the
           room once more.

“Daddy,” Eve interrupted as she approached Chris, “Hope was looking for you.”

“Hey Angel,” Chris replied turning his attention to his daughter as he reached out to her, “sleep
well?” Hope cooed in response as Chris held her against him protectively, “how about we go check
on dinner? What do you say?”

Chris took Hope into the kitchen as Eve glanced over at their guests, “I’ll go work on those drinks.”

“Okay,” Karen nodded as Eve followed Chris into the kitchen. Karen turned to look at Frank,
           “what were you thinking?”

           “He started it,” Frank defended.

“Eve’s one of my best friends. Can’t we just all try to get along tonight?”

“Karen, Chris Ramsey is not one of my favorite people and you know that after all he put me
           through....” Frank began.

“I realize that Frank, but please for me can’t we just try to be civil tonight? I really wanted to have a
           nice evening.”

“Well,” Frank sighed, “Okay, but only because you asked me.”

“Thank you Frank,” she stepped up to kiss him, “I really appreciate this.”

           “You owe me.”

“Oh don’t worry I have plenty of plans on how to make it up to you,” she offered with a smile as
she looked up at him, “I love you.”

“I love you too Karen,” he smiled hoping he could keep his promise.

“Okay Hope, daddy’s going to teach you first hand how to make a martini,” Chris explained as Eve
           stepped into the kitchen.

           “Chris what are you doing?”

“Finding a way to tolerate having Scanlon in our home,” Chris reached inside the refrigerator for
some olives, “okay now we take the olives and bring them over here,” he explained to Hope, “next
we go in here,” he opened a cabinet.

“Chris, you are not teaching our daughter how to make a martini,” Eve replied tearing the bottle of
           gin from his hand.

“Why not? It’s a Ramsey special and eventually she’ll be a master like me,” Chris smiled at her
           proudly.

“Even so she’s three weeks old Chris and it’s the last thing she needs to know,” Eve frowned
           slightly.

“What’s the first thing?” Chris reached out to her drawing Eve closer to him, “how much I love her
mommy to be putting up with having Frank in our home?”

“Chris, it’s just dinner,” Eve reminded him.

“Eve, but you’re asking so much,” Chris sighed, “look I said I’ll try to be nice, but no promises.”

“Chris I’m not asking you to be something that you clearly are not.”

“Good, then you won’t mind if I invite some more people over to even things out,” Chris decided, “I
mean since we’re going out on a limb here.”

“Chris, who do you want to invite over?”

“I was thinking about calling my brother,” Chris sighed, “I mean I realize Jack and I aren’t on the
best of terms, but considering that I have to put up with Frank, well it might be nice to have
someone in my corner and since Jack and I are making ground with one another.....”

“Say no more,” Eve handed him the phone as she reached for Hope, “just try not to spend all night
in the kitchen dodging our company.”

“I won’t,” he replied as she eyed him skeptically, “I promise.”

“You’d better,” she warned as she shot him one last look.

“Oh Eve, the things I do for love,” Chris muttered under his breath as he dialed Jack’s number.
After a few rings Jack answered as Chris stirred the simmering dinner, “Hey Jack it’s Chris and
before you ask any questions or wonder what is going on, I’m asking if you and Livvie would like to
come to dinner tonight. I know it sounds like a crazy request and pretty unbelievable out of me,”
Chris peered into the living room as Frank, Karen and Eve chatted, “but I’m kind of in the need for
           reinforcement here.”

Ian checked the time once more as he moved over to the sign out sheet. Taking in a breath, he
couldn’t believe that this was going to be his last night at the hospital. While he’d informed everyone
that there would be a week before he left town, plans had changed and he promised Melanie that
he’d get down to India as soon as possible. His work was done here and now he had the future to
face. With a heavy heart, he signed out as Colleen looked to him.

“We’ll miss you around here Dr. Thornhart,” Colleen swooned over him.

“I’ll miss you too,” he offered with a smile, “it’s been a pleasure working with you.”

“Good luck,” Colleen smiled at him.

“Good luck to you too and if you’re ever in India,” he reached for her hand giving it a light kiss,
           “look me up.”

“I will,” she nodded, “take care.”

“Fair well Colleen,” he waved as he headed to the on call room ready to clear out his locker. He
stepped inside noting the darkness as he made his way over towards his locker. He stopped in front
of Eve’s as he reached out to touch it. “It could’ve been great Lambert,” he sighed pressing his
fingers against the locker door, “but you’re happy now and that’s what matters.”

Ian released his hold on her locker as he turned towards his. Suddenly a sound rose from Chris’
office. Ian turned to look in the direction of the sounds as they grew louder, “Ramsey?” he
questioned with a frown, “what the hell are you doing in there?”

With that he stepped towards the office door as the thumping sound continued. Last he’d heard Eve
had been home with Chris while he was recovering, but it was fairly obvious that someone was in
the office, but if not Chris, then who. He moved forward taking a moment to listen before he noted
the door was slightly ajar. He paused taking another moment to observe the situation before he
pressed the door open to reveal a man masked by the shadows in the office.

“What are you doing in here?” Ian questioned as the man raised his flashlight shining it in Ian’s face.

“I was looking for Dr. Ramsey,” the voice explained moving away from the desk.

“Well he’s not here and you have no business being here,” Ian answered firmly.

“You wouldn’t happen to know where I could find him, would you?”

“I’m afraid not, but what I do know is that you shouldn’t be in here. I’m going to have to ask you to
           leave.”

“You’re right. It’s just one of the nurse’s said I might be able to find him here.”

           “And you are?”

“A friend of the family. Dr. Ramsey and I are old college buddies and I thought we could catch up.”

“Like I said, he’s not here,” Ian replied skeptically, “but I can leave a message at the desk for him.
In fact if it’s important, you could do it yourself. I would be more than willing to show you where
           you can leave it.”

“Would you really,” the man questioned circling the desk, “that’s awfully kind of you Dr...”

“Thornhart,” Ian nodded, “now I think we should be going.”

“Oh of course,” the man agreed reaching into his pocket, “but just one more thing.”

“Yes?” Ian questioned as the man revealed the revolver he’d had tucked away inside and aimed it at
Ian as the room went dark and a stifled sound of the gunshot filled the darkness.

Henry Ramsey stepped out of the airport as the winds picked up around him. Somehow he’d
always hated New York this time of year. Why Chris had picked such a place to stay in after all this
time. Oh well, he thought to himself as he headed towards the street. Now was not time for
complaints as he had a job to do. He had to find what he’d sent Chris and he just hoped and prayed
that Chris had taken care of it.

“Can I help you with something,” one of the flight attendants that had been on his flight questioned
approaching him, “you look a little lost.”

“I haven’t been here in a while,” he admitted with a flirty smile as he thought of the extra attention
she’d given him on the plane, “it’s just changed a bit.”

“Nothing’s ever really the same in this town for long,” she sighed, “can I get a cab for you or
           something?”

“Actually,” he flashed her the sexy Ramsey smile, “how would you feel about joining me for a
           drink?”

“I have to check in,” she thought it over, “but if you give me half an hour...”

“I’ll meet you in the lounge,” he offered reaching for her hand and pressing a kiss upon it, “eagerly.”

“I’ll be there,” she smiled before going off to finish up her work.

“Maybe this won’t be all bad,” he thought to himself realizing that while he was in town for a
purpose maybe just maybe he could have a little fun along the way.

“Thank God you’re here,” Chris opened the door as Jack stood before him.

“It sounded urgent,” Jack confessed handing over the bottle of wine he brought with him, “I hope
           I’m not late.”

“No not at all. I was just about to serve dinner,” Chris explained noting the absense of Livvie, “I
take it you’d rather be alone tonight.”

“Livvie had something with her father,” Jack shrugged, “and I wasn’t really in the mood for a
           gathering at the lighthouse.”

“Smart man,” Chris noted, “Come on inside.”

“So what seems to be the problem?” Jack questioned.

“Jack, hello,” Eve smiled at him as she greeted him, “No Livvie tonight?”

“She had other plans,” he shrugged slightly.

“Oh well in any case, come and sit down. We were just about to have dinner.”

“Alright,” Jack nodded as the phone rang.

“Be right back,” Chris instructed leaving Eve and Jack alone.

“Can I get you a drink or something?”

“No, I’m fine thanks,” Jack said shifting nervously.

           “Something wrong?”

“No, no why would you think that?”

“With the way you ran out of here last night...”

“It was just a rough night,” Jack shrugged.

           “A fight with Livvie?”

“Something like that,” he nodded looking over to Karen and Frank with Hope, “Hope looks
           happy.”

“She’s always excited to be the center of attention,” Eve admitted with a slight laugh.

“So she is,” Jack noted, “much like Chris.”

“She did get some of his ego,” Eve laughed lightly, “but well I think I can keep her in line.”

“We’ll train her to behave,” Jack teased.

“Coming from you I’d have to wonder,” Eve teased back as Chris returned to him looking rather
shaken up. Eve reached out to him, “Chris, what’s wrong?”

“I just got a call from the hospital,” he answered emotionlessly, “it seems there was an accident.”

           “An accident?” Eve repeated.

“Well, I’m not so sure that’s what it was,” Chris admitted reaching out to Eve, “Eve, I don’t know
           how to say this.”

“Chris, what is it? What’s wrong?”

“Tonight there was a break in.....”

           “What?”

“Someone broke into my office apparently and well,” Chris trailed off.

           “What is it?”

“It’s Ian,” Chris took in a breath, “Eve, he’s dead.

                                   Chapter Three

“Dead,” Eve repeated with a gasp, “Chris that’s not possible. There must be some mistake.”

“Eve, Garcia and Andy are there now,” Chris explained with a sigh, “they want me to come down
to my office for some questions.”

“Why? What do they need from you?”

“He was in my office Eve,” Chris reminded her, “they just want to ask a few questions.”

“Fine, then I’m going with you,” Eve looked to Karen, “can you watch Hope?”

           “Eve, I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“Chris, I’m going with you,” Eve argued, “and nothing you say will change my mind.”

“Eve please,” he started realizing it was senseless to keep arguing with her, “fine.”

           “Karen?” Eve looked to her.

“Of course,” Karen nodded as she held onto Frank, “I can’t believe this happened.”

“What kind of sick bastard would do that?” Frank frowned, “Ian was a good man.”

           “He was,” Karen nodded.

“I don’t understand,” Eve shook her head.

“Ian had a lot of enemies Eve,” Chris reminded her.

“But he was a good man.”

“Men like Ian also have a trail of enemies behind him,” Chris tried to remind her, “that Harris guy
           that kidnapped you...”

“Ian killed him. I was there. I saw him die,” Eve shook her head, “it couldn’t have been Harris.”

“None the less I need to get over to GH.”

“I’ll come with you,” Jack piped in breaking his silence.

“Jack, you don’t have to,” Eve began, “we’ll be okay.”

“No, I think it’s a good idea,” Chris argued, “when I talk to the police you can stay with Jack”

“Chris, I want to be with you. If someone intentionally did this to Ian, then I want to help find that
person and bring them to justice.”

“Eve, whoever did this to Ian, is obviously a sick person and the last thing I want is to have you
wrapped up in this,” Chris reached out to her, “Hope and I need you far too much to let this take
           you away from us.”

“I’m not going anywhere Chris,” Eve frowned slightly, “it’s just when I think about it being Ian in
           your office...”

“I know Eve,” he cut her off. Turning his eyes towards Frank and Karen he tossed Frank a warning
look, “take care of my daughter.”

“We will,” Karen promised with a nod as Frank opened his mouth to speak.

“We’ll call you when we know something more,” Eve insisted as she grabbed her jacket.

“I’ll drive,” Jack announced as they left the apartment all lost in their thoughts about the tragedy that
was waiting for them at GH.

“Garcia, what’s this all about,” Kevin questioned as he was escorted down the hallway towards
Chris Ramsey’s office, “why won’t anyone tell me what’s going on here?”

“We thought you should see this for yourself Kevin,” Garcia frowned motioning towards the half
opened door, “it’s, well it’s rather ugly in there.”

“What happened?” Kevin frowned slightly as he noted the flash coming from the police officer he
could see taking pictures inside the office, “What’s going on here?”

“It seems there’s been a murder tonight,” Garcia explained, “one of the doctors heard a disturbance
from what we’ve gathered and they investigated the office, only to end up being in the wrong place
           at the wrong time...”

“In Chris Ramsey’s office?” Lucy questioned as she stepped into the on call room.

“Lucy, I thought I told you to wait in the car,” Kevin gave her a look as he turned towards her, “you
           shouldn’t be here.”

“Doc, I knew something was going on and I was not going to just sit there in the car when
something was obviously happening here,” her gaze drifted to Garcia, “Are you saying that Chris
           Ramsey is dead?”

“No such luck Lucy,” Chris’ voice rose above the crowd as Chris, Eve and Jack entered the on call
           room.

“Chris,” Garcia called out to him, “you’re just in time.”

“Where is he?” Eve questioned stepping forward, “where’s Ian?”

“Ian,” Lucy repeated blankly, “Eve are you saying that tonight Ian was...” she gasped, “Oh my
           god...no.”

“I’m going in there,” Kevin announced as he stepped forward.

           “Me too,” Chris decided.

           “So am I,” Eve announced.

“I’m not staying out here alone,” Lucy added.

“Look, I realize that this news is rather,” Garcia paused, “shocking, but I really think it best if only
Kevin went in there for now.”

“It’s my office Garcia and you called me down here for a reason,” Chris reminded him.

           “Dr. Ramsey,” Garcia began.

“I don’t have a problem with Chris being in there as perhaps it could help us get to what was going
on in the office,” Kevin began with a slight frown as he looked to Lucy, “I’ll be right back.”

“Doc,” Lucy started reaching out to him, “just be careful.”

           “I will,” he agreed.

“Jack, keep an eye on Eve,” Chris insisted as Jack gave a nod. Chris placed his hands on Eve’s
           shoulders, “just stay put.”

“I’ll be right here waiting for you,” Eve nodded fighting the tears building in her eyes as she reached
out to hug Chris, “I love you.”

“I love you too Eve,” He whispered kissing her gently before leaving with Kevin and Garcia as his
mind traveled to what could be waiting for them inside.

Karen held Hope close to her as she stood before the penthouse window looking outside into the
sun’s final rays slipping from the sky. She let out a sigh as she thought about Ian and what had
happened to him. Noting Karen was lost in her thoughts Frank stepped in behind her placing his arm
           around her.

           “You okay?” he questioned.

“Not really,” she admitted honestly, “I just can’t believe that Ian’s dead. I mean just yesterday I was
telling him what a pain he was always barking out orders at people, and now...it just doesn’t seem
           right.”

“Karen, nothing about this seems right,” Frank agreed.

“But I guess in a way it makes you appreciate what you do have in this lifetime huh? You just see
that in one minute it could all be gone.”

“Karen, that’s not going to happen with us,” Frank tried to assure her.

“It just seems like when people are getting their lives together something happens,” she looked
down to Hope, “but it’s not fair.”

“No it’s not, but it doesn’t happen all the time,” Frank urged her to look at him, “Take Chris and
Eve for example. Look how happy they are with Hope.”

“I know Frank,” she nodded as Hope’s eyelids fluttered with exhaustion, “but that’s just it. You
           never know.”

“Karen, what happened with Ian was a tragedy but I’m sure they’ll get down to the bottom of this.”

“It’s the Port Charles police department we’re talking about,” she gave him a pointed look, “when
have they ever done anything right?”

“Good point,” Frank sighed, “but believe me, this is something we can all work through together.”

“I know,” she nodded, “its just so hard to think that we’re bringing a child into this world where
           such evil can happen.”

“Karen, it’s not all that bad,” Frank started.

“Frank, think about it. You have a daughter out there that you’ll never see again because the system
failed and Julie left with her.”

“I know that Karen,” Frank nodded, “but that doesn’t mean I’ve given up hope or faith in those I
           love.”

“I know Frank,” Karen sighed, “it’s just...it’s so hard to understand why things happen the way they
           do.”

“I know Karen and maybe we’re not meant to understand, but in the end, I think that we need to
realize that we have all we need within the love we have in each other.”

“We do, don’t we,” Karen half smiled, “Frank, I love you.”

“I love you too Karen,” he brought his arm around her carefully as he nodded to Hope, “and very
soon we’re going to have our own little one running around here. Our own little miracle.”

“I can’t wait,” Karen offered with a light smile as she looked to Hope wondering why life couldn’t
be easier for those she loved and cared about.

“So do you know what happened to him?” Lucy looked over at Eve, “Do you know why someone
           would do something to Ian?”

“Lucy, I have no idea,” Eve started with a sigh, “I don’t know what happened.”

“Maybe Ian decided to have someone finish the job you started on him Eve,” Lucy remarked off
handedly, “seeing as your tore his heart out.”

“Lucy, I did not tear his heart out,” Eve stopped herself, “Ian wouldn’t kill himself.”

“No, he wouldn’t,” Lucy agreed as the tears misted over in her eyes, “it’s just that he had so much
ahead of him even if he’d moved on past you.”

“Despite what you might think Lucy I did care for Ian.”

“Oh it showed when you married Chris.”

“Lucy, don’t even lecture me,” Eve warned, “You don’t know the first thing about Chris and I.”

“What is there to know when they have that old saying. What is it again...ah yes, birds of a
feather...” Lucy shot back, “you didn’t even wait a moment jumping from Ian’s bed to Chris’ when
Ian wasn’t bending down to kiss your feet while his wife was hurting.”

“Look Lucy,” Eve stepped forward, “from what I gathered about you, you didn’t even wait ten
minutes before jumping Kevin when you switched the DNA results to make the world think I was
dead when Harris kidnapped Ian and I.”

“I thought you ran off with Ian,” Lucy defended.

“You wish I had because you used that time to make your move on Kevin and manipulate him into
bed again,” Eve snapped at her.

“The only bed hopping manipulator here is you Eve,” Lucy stood taller, “but as they say once a
           tramp, always a tramp.”

“Well gee Lucy, I may be a tramp in your eyes, but when you think about it, it’s truly pathetic that
you had to lie about my death to even raise enough interest in Kevin to get him to sleep with you,”
Eve shot back bitterly, “then again I’m sure that was probably your only shot since Kevin wasn’t
too happy by the time he got around to me after you lost your appeal.”

“Why you little...” Lucy lunged towards her as Jack stepped between them.

“Bring it on Lucy,” Eve taunted as Jack held Lucy back.

“Oh I’ll bring it,” Lucy announced determined.

“Break it up,” Jack ordered as he held Lucy back, “this isn’t the time or the place.”

           “Evie shouldn’t have started this.”

           “You started it Lucy.”

“Eve,” Jack warned looking to her.

“I’m not going to sit here and put up with her,” Eve announced.

“Why because I’m not a man that you can sweet talk or screw to get what you want out of them?”
           Lucy questioned with a sneer.

“Look Lucy,” Eve started then stopped herself as she took in a long, sharp breath trying to calm
herself down, “I love my husband and our daughter. Chris and Hope are my world and while I did
still care about Ian, I won’t deny that I love Chris much like you claim to love Kevin.”

“I do love Doc. More than you were ever capable of.”

“Maybe you do Lucy,” Eve nodded in response, “because deep in my heart I know that Chris and
Hope are where I am meant to be.”

“For this week?” Lucy raised a brow.

“Lucy, I really don’t care what you think,” Eve sighed, “I’m not going to defend my position to
you,” she stepped back as she turned towards the door, “I’m going to go to the nurse’s station for a
           while to cool down.”

“Chris wanted you to wait here.” Jack reminded her.

“I think I’ll go talk to Colleen,” Eve decided stepping forward as Lucy took in a breath.

“Eve wait,” Lucy started with a sigh.

“What now Lucy?” Eve turned to face her.

“We need....” Lucy took in a breath determined, “we need to talk.”

           “Why now?”

“Look, I’m...I’m....” Lucy paused, “I’m sorry Eve. I didn’t mean to attack you like that.”

“Come again?” Eve blinked back at her.

“Eve, I realize that we’re all just upset here about Ian and when I said what I said,” Lucy took in
another breath, “well it isn’t any of my business.”

           “No it’s not,” Eve agreed.

“But still you can understand where I’m coming from.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever understood where you came from Lucy.”

“Likewise with you, but none the less,” Lucy sighed, “I don't want us to carry on like this. At least
           not now.”

“Why are you saying this?” Eve asked skeptical.

“I’m not sure exactly, but for what it’s worth, I didn’t mean to attack you,” Lucy rubbed her
shoulders, “it’s just been a rough night.”

“It has been,” Eve agreed, “for all of us and for what it‘s worth, I‘m sorry for what I said too.”

“I just can’t believe Ian’s gone,” Lucy blurted out painfully, “this just seems so wrong.”

“It does,” Eve nodded, “I mean I knew he was leaving, but I never imagined it would end like this. It
           just seems so....so wrong.”

“I thought maybe you could shed some light into this,” Garcia repeated as he lead Kevin over
towards the cot set up across the office.

“Is he...” Chris stammered a bit as he noted the bloodstained sheet before him, “is he under that?”

“We thought it would be best given the nature we found him in,” Garcia nodded, “it’s pretty messy.”

“What are we looking at here Garcia,” Kevin questioned trying to remain professional as Garcia
           approached the sheet covered form.

“Well it looks like a gunshot wound did him in, however,” Garcia removed the sheet to reveal Ian’s
mutilated form before them as Chris fought the cough building inside of his throat, “there was
something a bit more puzzling in the positioning. Dr. Ramsey, are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” Chris nodded unable to believe the corpse before him was what was left of Ian
Thornhart. He took in a breath grateful that Eve hadn’t insisted upon following him into the office
because he was certain she wouldn’t be able to handle seeing Ian this way.

“As you can see the body was dragged across the room, post mortem we’re assuming, and over to
the cot where he was positioned strategically with this,” Garcia help up a plastic baggie that one of
the officers handed to him, “in his lap.”

“What is that?” Chris questioned noting the object inside.

“It’s a page,” Garcia’s eyes never strayed from Kevin’s as he continued, “a page from...”

“General Homicide,” Kevin finished feeling a cold fire rush through him as Garcia handed the bag
           over to him.

“I thought this might ring familiar to you,” Garcia replied as Kevin noted the blood covering the
corner of the page within the bag.

“Wait a second,” Chris gave them a look, “are you saying Ian’s murderer left him here with a page
of General Homicide? How can that be? I mean what would it have to do with Ian? He wasn’t even
around when Kevin wrote that piece of trash.”

“No he wasn’t,” Garcia agreed as he looked to Kevin, “which is why we called Kevin down here to
           explain it. Any theories?”

Kevin read over the page as Chris glanced back over to Ian’s body, “Wait a second,” Chris moved
in closer to Ian to take a look, “his index finger is missing. Who the hell would take his finger and
           where would they....”

“...in the safe behind the picture frame wrapped up with a stethoscope and the scalpel that was used
to remove it,” Kevin answered emotionlessly, “it’ll be in there.”

“Safe?” Chris gave Kevin a look, “How did you know that there was a safe in here?”

“It used to be an office of...” Kevin stopped himself, “just trust me. Did you check the safe Garcia?”

“Not yet. We haven’t been able to crack the combination yet. Dr. Ramsey?”

“It’s six, thirteen, twenty five,” Chris replied cautiously as one of the officers moved over to the wall
safe. Chris looked over to Kevin, “Kevin, how do you know this? What in the world does General
Homicide have to do with Ian? Why would someone kill Ian if they were trying to recreate General
Homicide again?” Chris raised his voice a bit as a chill overtook him, “besides haven’t we already
had a case of been there done that? Cooper’s dead Kevin.”

“I know that, but Julie’s not,” Kevin answered.

“Why would Julie risk her freedom to come back and kill people? She has what she wants,” Chris
defended, “and beyond that as I’ve already stated Ian’s not in your stupid book.”

“No, Ian wasn’t,” Kevin replied turning to look at Chris, “but you were.”

“What?” Chris gave him a look, “what are you saying?”

“Chris, the character that was based upon you was having an affair with the Chief Resident and
during one of their late night meetings he found himself on the wrong end of the scalpel.”

“Wait a second Kevin, are you saying that my character was shot in the head and then had his finger
cut off and put in a safe?” Chris blurted out incredulously.

“I thought you read the book,” Kevin gave him a look.

“Are you kidding? What would I have to do with that piece of trash?”

“Well none the less, your character had his throat slit and then the rest and as you can clearly see on
Ian,” Kevin nodded towards the body, “there is an incision on the throat.”

“Now just wait a second here,” Chris blurted out, “are you saying that someone came in here
           tonight to deliberately kill me?”

           “Metaphorically speaking...”

“Screw metaphors,” Chris snapped taking a step back, “Ian’s dead.”

           “Chris....”

“You son of a bitch. This is your fault,” Chris snapped at him as Garcia approached them.

“Chris I had no idea when I wrote it that....”

“Kevin,” Garcia called out to him, “I think you should see this.”

“What now?” Chris questioned looking over to the safe.

“We found the finger,” Garcia explained, “but that’s not all?”

“What else is there?” Kevin questioned as Garcia pulled out a page before him, “what is that?”

“It looks like another page from the book,” Garcia explained as Kevin glanced over at the blood
           stained page, “recognize it?”

Kevin eyed it for a moment before he shook his head, “No.”

“Then it’s not General Homicide?” Chris asked a bit relieved.

“No it’s not,” Kevin scanned over the page once more before his eyes widened, “but it’s worse,
           much worse.”

“What do you mean worse? How can it be worse?” Chris snapped.

“It may not be General Homicide,” Kevin paused drawing in a breath, “but from the looks of things
it’s a sequel and from this, I think we’ve just been given a clue to who our next victim is.”

“Next victim,” Chris repeated, “you mean....” he moved in to look at the page as a gasp over took
him, “oh my...if that’s true, then that means...”

“That means we can’t afford to wait,” Kevin looked to Garcia, “we need to find her....now.”

                                    Chapter Four

“I’m going home,” Chris decided as he tried to shake the thought of the page he’d just read, “I’m
           getting Eve out of here.”

“That’s probably a good idea,” Kevin agreed, “and same goes for Lucy. I don’t want her here.”

“I understand your concerns, but Kevin I think we should discuss this,” Garcia nodded to the page.

“It’s all there,” Kevin replied with a slight frown, “the next victim is clearly...”

“Gabriella Garza,” Chris finished, “and last I checked she was on duty this evening. Now if we’re
           finished....”

“Dr. Ramsey,” Garcia frowned slightly, “if Dr. Thornhart’s murder was somehow related to you,
perhaps we should put a guard on your home.”

“I’m safer on my own,” Chris argued.

“Chris, maybe Garcia’s right. Maybe you should have someone around just to be safe,” Kevin
           started once more.

“Safe from what?” Eve’s voice rose through the crowd as she entered the office. A gasp rose in her
throat as her eyes turned towards the direction Ian had been in.

“Eve, what are you doing in here,” Chris asked rushing over to her pulling her into an embrace as he
tried to shield her from the site before her.

“What the hell happened here Chris?” Eve questioned as the image clouded her mind.

“Eve, let’s just go home,” Chris suggested.

“Home?” Eve repeated, “Chris, what happened to Ian?”

“It’s a long story Dr. Lambert,” Garcia began.

“Long story? Garcia a man is dead,” she snapped at him as she stepped away from Chris, “he’s
dead and that’s all you can say. Shouldn’t you be...” Eve trailed off as she noted the position of
           Ian’s body, “no.”

“Eve,” Kevin spoke up as she moved in closer to Ian.

“Oh God no,” she felt the tears clouding her eyes as she moved forward, “how could...” she looked
           to Kevin, “your damned book.”

“Eve,” Kevin began once more finding himself at a loss.

“Ian is dead just like your book,” Eve noted the missing index finger, “down to the last detail he was
murdered like...” she looked over to her husband as her heart filled with fear, “oh God.”

“Eve,” Chris reached out to her drawing her into his arms as her sobs overtook her, “Eve, look at
           me.”

“Oh Chris,” she hugged him tighter, “it all makes sense. In your office, the way that your
character....Ian was killed the way that you....”

“Shh...it’s okay Eve,” Chris held her close to him as he ran his fingers through her hair, “I’m here.”

“I could’ve lost you,” Eve sobbed harder as her hold on him constricted.

“I’m right here,” he tried to assure her as he gave Kevin an angry glare.

“I think we’ve better focus on getting in touch with Gabriella,” Kevin noted to Garcia, “from this
passage here, it looks like time is anything, but on our side.”

“I’ll get right on it,” Garcia nodded.

“Chris, what’s going on? What’s this talk about Gabriella,” Eve questioned in a panic, “are they
           saying that....”

“Eve, I don’t know what they’re saying, but we’re going to find who did this.”

“Julie, Julie had to do this Chris,” Eve blurted out, “because the only person who could’ve.....” the
color drained from her face, “Cooper...”

           “Cooper is dead Eve.”

“I know, I know. I held his lifeless heart in my hands,” Eve closed her eyes remembering his blood
upon her as her tears overcame her, “he’s gone. This is supposed to be over...”

“It is over,” Chris tried to assure her as he held her tighter praying that he wasn’t lying to his wife,
           “let’s go home Eve.”

“Okay,” Eve nodded in response, “I want to see Hope and hold her in my arms.”

“We’ll do just that,” he informed her protectively, “We’ll spend the night with her in our arms.”

“I want that,” Eve agreed holding onto him, “I want that for us.”

“We’ll just find Jack and be on our way,” Chris decided as he looked out into the on call room,
           “where is Jack?”

“He said he had a phone call to make,” Eve answered behind tears, “he said he’d be right back.”

“Well none the less, we need to find him and get out of here. Right now GH is the last place I want
           us to be.”

Gabriella Garza searched her purse for her car keys as she walked through the parking lot. After a
long shift at work, all she could think about was going home to a nice, long bubble bath and relaxing
while she waited for Joe. He was working the clinic for Ian and while her shift had ended, Joe had
urged her into going home and relaxing. Now with a sigh, she only wished she could find her stupid
keys. Why hadn’t she pulled them out sooner and spared herself the trouble, she thought to herself.

Stopping in front of one of the lights in the lot, Gabby held her purse up hoping to get a glimpse of
where her keys were tucked away. She sighed as she fished into her purse once again. The winds
picked up around her once again as she silently cursed herself for not having taken her keys out
           earlier.

“Ugh,” she groaned as a noise came from behind her. She spun around to look at the parking lot as
she noted that it was empty except for the cars that surrounded her, “wonderful Gabby,” she shook
her head, “now you’re not only missing your keys, but you’re turning paranoid as well.” With that
she reached inside her purse once more and located her keys, “ah-ha,” she began with a sigh of
relief as she turned to approach her car.

Hearing the wind pick up as she rushed towards her car, the sounds she’d heard earlier returned,
but somehow they were different. She glanced over her shoulder for a moment as she heard
something behind her. Beyond the shadows was a dark figure behind her moving at a rapid pace.
Looking directly at her car she continued on forward realizing that this was probably nothing, but
given the nature of the day she’d been having, she’d just play it safe and get to her car quickly. In an
attempt to avoid a confrontation with the shadow behind her, Gabby rushed over to her car pressing
the button to turn off the alarm, but there was no response.

“Not now,” she groaned slightly pressing it once again nervously as her keys slipped out of her
hand. She let out a groan as she listened for the sounds from earlier. All was silent behind her as she
bend down to sweep her keys up from underneath her car. Finally locating them, she stood up and
gasped as she saw the man behind her.

“You nearly scared the life out of me,” she let out a breath as she looked over at him, “for a minute I
thought you were some kind of stalker or something,” she explained as her heart was racing, “I
don’t know what made me so paranoid, but thank God it’s you,” she frowned slightly as he stepped
in closer to her saying nothing, “is everything okay? You don’t look right,” she repeated giving him a
sideways glance, “is something going on?”

“Doc, what’s happening?” Lucy questioned as Kevin returned to the on call room with Chris and
           Eve, “Ian’s really.....”

“Dead,” Kevin nodded, “I’m afraid so.”

“We’ll get a rush on looking for Nurse Garza,” Garcia ordered his men as Lucy looked on.

“Gabriella? Doc, why are they looking for Gabriella? Do they think that she did this to Ian?”

“No, no Lucy. It’s just,” Kevin sighed, “Lucy, I don’t know how to say this but they seem to think
           that Ian’s death was actually....”

“Actually a what? Doc, don’t leave me in the dark. What’s going on?”

“They think it was a copycat killing,” Kevin finally admitted painfully.

           “Copycat of what?” Lucy asked.

“General Homicide,” Chris remarked, “it seems that someone thought it might be a nice idea to bring
a return to the hell our lives in Port Charles were by re-enacting a death from that piece of not so
           fictitious crap.”

“General Homicide,” Lucy looked to Kevin, “is that true?”

“See for yourself Lucy,” Eve piped in, “Ian was murdered down to the last detail like Kevin penned
           Chris’ death to be.”

“That’s not possible unless,” Lucy looked to Kevin, “do you think that it’s Julie? Do you think that
maybe she’s back with Christina and she’s taking revenge on us all for driving her away?”

“Julie didn’t kill anyone Lucy,” Chris defended, “it was Cooper.”

“Right Chris,” Eve rolled her eyes, “like any of us believed that besides you.”

“You didn’t know her like I did,” Chris objected, “She wouldn’t risk her freedom with Christina to
come back and murder us all. Besides why would she murder Ian? She hardly knew the guy.”

“But she knew that you didn’t like him, so maybe just maybe you two are in it together,” Lucy
deducted, “maybe you know where she’s been all this time and you’ve been waiting for the perfect
moment to strike. Seeing as Ian was an obstacle in your path to happiness, maybe you wanted to
take him out, so you had Julie do it.”

“Gee Lucy, that would be like you to pin it on Chris,” Eve snapped at her, “but for your information,
Chris has been with me all night.”

“Gee, now why doesn’t that surprise me Doc,” Lucy turned to Kevin, “on second thought maybe
Chris and Eve wanted to cut a few strings and see to it that Ian wouldn’t question Hope’s paternity
           again. Maybe the planned for...”

“Lucy, that’s enough,” Kevin cut her off, “right now we need to find Gabriella. If the clue that was
given to us is accurate, she could be in danger at this very moment if not already.”

“You mean he’s going after Gabby?” Eve’s eyes widened.

“It seems so,” Kevin nodded answering Eve‘s question.

“Don’t you mean she?” Lucy added.

“We don’t know that,” Chris piped in.

“Chris, we have to help find her,” Eve urged.

“Garcia and his men are on it,” Chris reminded her.

“Exactly my point,” Eve frowned, “we need to help or else there’s no telling what could happen to
           Gabby.”

“Eve’s right,” Lucy reluctantly agreed, “we can’t let those idiots take charge of this investigation.”

“Lucy, I don’t think,” Kevin started.

“Doc, we need to find her,” Lucy insisted.

“Lucy’s got a point,” Eve nodded, “I’m sure she’s down by the ER and if not, maybe Joe might
           know where she is.”

“That’s a good idea,” Lucy agreed, “we should check it out.”

“Not alone you aren’t,” Kevin argued.

“Doc, it’s just down the hall and you can check the lounge. In fact why don’t you come with me and
           we’ll check the lounge.”

“And we’ll talk to Joe,” Eve announced reaching for Chris’ arm, “come on.”

“Eve, I really think we should head on home.”

“Chris, if anything happens to Gabby...”

“Eve, I don’t want anything happening to you.”

“Nothing will, but if we walk away, then I don’t know what will happen.”

“Fine,” Chris sighed looking to Kevin, “we’ll meet you back here in fifteen minutes.”

“Alright,” Kevin nodded as the two couples headed out in opposite directions.

“I wonder what’s going on at the hospital,” Frank began as Karen returned from Hope’s nursery, “it
just seems like they’ve been gone a while.”

“I’m not sure what they might’ve found,” Karen sighed taking a seat beside Frank, “there’s no
           telling what was there.”

“I don’t know Karen,” Frank frowned slightly, “is it cold in here or is it just me?”

“I think it’s just you,” Karen gave him a half smile as she swatted at him, “no but seriously it might
           be a little chilly.”

“Maybe I should see if Ramsey’s too cheap to turn on the thermostat,” Frank rose from the sofa as
there was a knock at the door. He gave Karen a look, “think they’re back?”

“Shouldn’t they have a key?” Karen asked.

“Perhaps,” Frank shrugged opening the door to find a woman before him.

“Is Dr. Ramsey home,” she asked in a panic.

“No neither one is around, can I take a message?”

“It’s my son,” she hesitated, “he has his finger stuck in the elevator door and I can’t seem to get it
out,” she admitted worriedly, “he’s done this a few times and Dr. Ramsey has helped with the
           situation when...”

“Say no more,” Frank raised his hand looking over to Karen, “I’ll be right back if that’s okay.”

“Of course. Go ahead,” she nodded as Frank left the apartment to assist the woman. Locking the
door behind Frank, she turned towards the sofa as the phone starting ringing, “never a dull moment I
suppose,” she sighed reaching for the phone hoping it was Eve with word from the hospital, “hello.”

“May I speak to Chris Ramsey,” a hoarse voice whispered on the other end of the line.

“I’m afraid Chris Ramsey is not in,” Karen began, “but if want me to take a message.”

“I know he’s there. Put him on the line. It’s urgent.”

“He’s really not able to take the phone, but I’d be more than willing to...”

“I don’t think you understand me. I want to speak with him now,” the voice snapped at her.

“He’s not around,” Karen answered unnerved.

“Look, I don’t know who you think you are, but if you don’t put him on the phone, you’ll dearly
regret not obeying my request you little bitch.”

“And you obviously picked the wrong person to bother tonight,” Karen snapped back slamming the
phone down as there was a knock at the door. Nearly jumping out of her skin, she rushed over to
find Frank on the other side waiting for her.

“Karen, what’s wrong?” Frank questioned reaching out to her.

“Chris just had a phone call,” she frowned embracing him, “the caller was rather rude.”

           “What did they say?”

“It doesn’t matter,” Karen shook her head, “you're here now and that’s all that’s important.”

“Have you seen Joe Scanlon around?” Chris questioned finding Amy Vinning in the hallway.

“He’s in emergency surgery right now with Dr. Quartermaine. Is something wrong?”

“Have you seen Gabriella Garza?” Eve asked dodging Amy’s question.

           “Why do you ask Eve?”

“Chris and I need to see her right away.”

           “Because?”

           “Because it’s important,” Chris added.

“It must be,” Amy noted, “well in any case, you won’t find her here. She got off her shift about
twenty minutes ago and said she was going home to take it easy for the night.”

“Twenty minutes you say?” Eve repeated before she looked to Chris, “I’ll call her apartment. You
           check the lot.”

“I’m not leaving you,” Chris replied reaching out to her and taking her down the hall with him,
           “Thanks Amy.”

“Chris, we have to call and warn her if she’s at home,” Eve argued.

“Here’s my cell phone,” Chris handed it to her, “call her once we’re outside,” he decided as he
noted the elevator was being worked on, “come on let’s take the stairs.”

“Alright,” Eve agreed as they moved over to the staircase and the door opened with Jack emerging
           from the other side.

“Jack,” Chris looked to his brother, “there you are.”

“What’s going on Chris?” Jack looked worried, “you two look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

“Considering Ian was just murdered tonight,” Chris began, “where were you?”

“I just stepped outside to make a call. The payphone was out of order, so I took my cell phone out
into the parking lot,” Jack explained, “Chris, what’s going on? Why do you look like you’re in some
           kind of race?”

“The person who took out Ian seems to have picked another target,” Chris informed him.

           “Another target?” Jack repeated.

“That’s right the police believe that Gabriella Garza is the next intended target,” Eve added, “did you
happen to see her when you were outside?”

“No, no it was dark and I was concentrating on the call I was making,” Jack frowned, “you really
           think she’s in danger?”

“That’s a bit of an understatement,” Chris sighed, “Eve and I were going to go look for her.”

“I’ll join ya,” Jack decided as Chris opened the door to the stairs.

“Thanks Jack,” Eve stopped giving him a look as she reached out to his cheek noticing a scratch
           upon it, “what happened?”

“Huh...oh I don’t know. There was a loose panel hanging down near the exit,” Jack shrugged
touching his face, “I must’ve scratched it or something.”

“Well you should probably get it looked at before we leave.”

“It’s fine Eve,” Jack sighed, “really.”

“Okay,” she replied turning towards the stairwell following Chris as Jack moved in behind her on
           their search for Gabby.

“Doc, do you really believe it’s starting up again?” Lucy questioned as she and Kevin walked down
           to the lounge.

“I don’t know what I believe anymore Lucy,” Kevin shook his head, “just when things seemed to be
           getting normal again, this happens.”

           “Doc, this isn’t your fault.”

“Isn’t it? I wrote that damned book and look what happened before,” Kevin admitted with a sigh,
           “Lucy that was a mistake.”

“Doc, you did not kill those people. Greg Cooper did and that was not your fault.”

“What about Ian? Ian was our friend Lucy and he was a good man.”

“I can’t explain Ian, but Doc I know in my heart that this isn’t your fault.”

“Then why do this? Why start the nightmare all over again,” he asked more so to himself as they
           walked together, “I should’ve known.”

           “How could you Doc?”

“I had a feeling,” he admitted.

“What do you mean you had a feeling,” she looked to him, “Doc, are you saying...”

“I didn’t want to tell you,” he began with a frown, “but I was having these dreams.”

“What kind of dreams Doc?” she asked worried.

“Just jumbled up pictures and images...memories...”

           “Of?”

“Ryan,” he admitted with a sigh, “and Grace. I don’t know why but they just started up...”

“...and you think it ties into what happened tonight.”

“Lucy, I don’t know, but what I do know is that someone is killing again based on my fiction, only
this time they took it a step further.”

“In creating chapters of their own,” she stopped him midstep, “Doc, you don’t think that it could be
           Julie...do you?”

“I don’t know Lucy,” Kevin admitted with a sigh, “at this point in time I honestly don’t know what’s
           what anymore.”

“Doc, this has to be some kind of sick game. The murders can’t be starting again,” she replied as
she reached out to him, “this wasn’t your fault and we’re going to get to the bottom of this before
           it’s too late.”

He reached out to embrace her as his eyes traveled to the pool of blood at her feet, “Lucy,” he
pulled her out of it as he motioned for her to look down at the floor right before the linen closet.

“Oh Doc,” she gasped as he moved in forward opening the door to reveal the blood soaked corpse
in the nurse’s uniform before him.

“We’re too late,” he gasped in horror as he realized the nightmare was just beginning. General
Homicide had come to life again.
